I too think the presentation is a great tool, and I plan to add it to my site.

Lengthy? A little - but I can live with it!

2  .WS Services / Showcase Your Website / Re: Site almost done but a little snag on: September 15, 2005, 04:19:39 PM
I am almost done with my site but have hit a little road block.  I'm trying to add some pictures to one of my pages and when I click on insert picture from gallery not all of the available images are shown.  I'm well under the 100 mb limit.  I'm not even up to half a meg.  Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas or know how to contact site builder help?  My site is at http://www.10amonth.ws.  All ideas, comments, and constructive critisism greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve Morse

Hi Steve -

Does anything look odd in your page title? I have copied/pasted it below in purple -

Webiste? Business? Both? Only $10 a month.
(What's a Webiste?)   Tongue

As for any ideas, here's a few:

I would suggest experimenting with a different font or font size, or use bold for some of your text
to "spice up" the pages. They look a little monotonous or un-exciting to read, at the moment.
Not your content, just the presentation of what you're saying.
(Just don't go crazy with it and make every other line a different color/style/size.)

For the "About Us" page - why not use some of your pictures from your "Doggie" and "Family" pages
on the right side of the "About Us" page to match your text on the left side? Maybe the two-column format,
the flag, or letter formats would work. You could then use one (or more) of the
"photo only" pages for something else. Your "About Us" page would then project more
of yourselves (if that's your goal), and your site could be more efficient.

For any others who may read this post -

I've said this before in other posts, but it's important (put yourself in your visitors' "shoes").

I see many sites listed on this forum that change the location of
the page links between pages - (not Steve's)
For example -
Home page - links on top left
Second page - links on right side
Third page - links back on top left
Fourth page - links on top right
and so on...

This is very distracting to a surfer!

Visitors like to be able to navigate a site quickly and easily.

If I land on a site and the page link directory is in a different
location on every page, I'm not going to take the extra time to
figure out where the links are - I'm gone!

Page links should be at the same location on every page -
wherever you decide to place them -

3  .WS/GDI Discussion / Questions & Issues / Re: Hosting/Disk Storage Questions on: September 12, 2005, 10:10:17 AM
Just got a signup to someone who wanted a website.Yeah! Until they discovered an alternative- Yahoo Hosting - its starter package is only $11.95 with 2gb of storage and 25 email address as well as a host of other features - not to mention 24hr support. Oh and by the way they also give you a "free" domain name. How is GDI supposed to compete with that. Aside from the business opportunity is there any competive edge? At first I thought GDI was a good deal for the price.  Huh

Hi SFonsesca -

I don't know anything about YHosting, so I would ask these questions -

Does Yahoo offer a way for the website to pay for itself? GDI does.
How many people, really, need 2gb of storage and 25 e-mail addresses for one domain?
Is the "free" domain name a Top Level Domain (like www.yoursitename.ws),
or something like www.yahoohosting.com/id#?#*%yourname (unprofessional-looking and hard to give to people) ?

Just some thoughts -

Hi Bruce -

To make your web link clickable in the forum, just type in

http://no-slipping.ws

You do not need to use the http:// tags.

I like the colors/background you chose -

To replace the page numbers with names, select "Properties" in the Site Builder,
beside the page you want to name. Type in the name you want in the "Link Name" blank.
Hit "Submit" and then "Publish". Your new page name should show up.

5  .WS Services / WebSite Development / Re: Simple step by step of posting banners on sites on: September 07, 2005, 01:52:20 PM
Hi Brock -

If you're using the Site Builder to create your website, try these steps:

If this is a GDI banner, go to the "Banners" section of your members' area and get the code for the banner you want -
Choose your banner and click "Show me the code". Copy all the html code in the block to your clipboard -

Next:
1. In your members' area, click "My Domains" then "Build My Website" under Current Domains -
2. Click "Edit" in the row next to the page you want to add the banner to -
3. Click "edit" in the section on the page where you want the banner -
(If you're adding a new section, select "Insert html code" as the section type)
4. When the page editor opens, click the tab labeled "html code" at the bottom -
5. Paste the new banner code into the existing code at the location where you want it to be seen -
(I put a <br> or a <p> at the beginning and end of the code if I want the banner on its own line)
6. Click the "preview" tab -
7. If it's what you want, click "Submit"  -
8. If not, repeat steps 3 - 6 until you're satisfied
9. Then click the block under "Publish" on the row across from your edited page

Your updated page is now available for all the www to see.

Hope this helps -

Hi Jennifer -

For some reason, it's scary to build (and go public with) your first website. At least for me it was -

Some suggestions -

1. Use one of your GDI e-mail addresses as your contact address, if possible. As it has been stated on the
forum before, show visitors you're actually using the product you want them to purchase. Maybe something
like info@learnhowtoearn.ws or contact_jen@learnhowtoearn.ws .

2. I like your "testimony" about online marketing - but some of the text looks long, and this might
discourage a visitor from reading what you want to tell them. Try to break it up into paragrahs,
with a space between each paragraph.
(To create a space, type <p> in the html code of your section at the end of the paragraph.)

3. On the "Great Tips" page, the text seems really large - it looks to be a 4 or 5 in Site Builder. It's
kinda hard on my eyes to read it, but that may be just me -

Come to think of it, I am due for an eye exam...   Tongue

Great first site!

Chip said recently we have 6 pages.  Smiley
Deborah H

I have seen some GDI websites that have more than 6 pages.  I wonder how they got more?

Rich

I believe with the new site builder you may have up to ten pages, but I haven't tried it -
Plus the Guestbook page and the Feedback page. That makes twelve in all.

Can anyone verify this? Has anyone "maxed out" their pages with Site Builder?

Hi Branden -

The simple look/feel of your site is good.

A few suggestions:
1. Give your "home page" a name -

2. All the links at the top -
If your other pages don't contain any information, delete them or
make them "invisible" until they do. Why link to a page your're still
working on?

3. The "Follow these 3 Simple Steps"
It's easier to read them as three steps if they are all "in line" with each other.
The first one is inset an inch or so - make it even with the other two, or the
other two even with it. I would also make them all the same "boldness" and font size.

Hi Elaine -

I like the colors you chose -
But I would stay with one type of link layout through your site.
Put the links at the top or on the same side for every page -

It provides continuity for the surfer to visit ALL your pages, and
that's what you want. Right?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not being critical, just trying to share another viewpoint.

Hello,  I understand that on the sitebuilder, single colum you will recieve an "Error122" if there are to many charactors. But, How many Charactors are we allowed?

Sharon Lee

Sharon, the max characters per section in the old site builder was 4,000.
I haven't seen any information regarding this in particular with the new version.

A way to test it may be to create a 4,000 character document in Word
(use the "Word Count" feature under the "Tools" tab) and create a new page
in Site Builder with it. Then add a few characters, update it, and see if the "error 122" pops up.
It doesn't matter if it's information for a real webpage - any combination of
characters should suffice. Just delete the page after the test.

Hope this helps -

Hi Frank -

Thanks for the input -

The computer I created the site with didn't display like that,
but the PC I'm on now does - may be the different OS (MicroS2000 vs. XP).

I definitely MUST change that!   Shocked

Probably make the the page format one column instead of two -

Thanks man!

Hi Michelle -

Have you tried the "insert" button that is on the chicklet underneath one of the sections?

"edit, clear, insert, delete"

I have had some success with placing information above an existing section using it -

13  .WS Services / WebSite Development / Re: Too Much on One Page? on: August 26, 2005, 06:23:55 PM
Hi Pam -

I had the same trouble. The old site builder told you when you
had two many characters in one section on your page (4,000).

The new site builder gives an "error 122" (I think) - it seems to
mean there are too many characters in that section.

The only way I have been able to correct the error is to copy/paste
some of the information into a new section on the same page.

To do this, just click on "Add Content" in the site builder blue control
bar at the top of the page. A new section is added, after you choose what
type of information is to go into it (html, flash, image, etc.). By default, each
new section is added to the bottom of the page.

After you add the new information, you may have to manipulate the spacing
to get the "look" you're after.

Hope this helps -  Smiley

 Hi GDI Family -  Tongue

I've had my site a while, but made some recent updates to
get used to the new Site Builder software.

It makes html easier, but seems to add white space - so I delete it out.

I LIKE the new SB.   Cool

Check out my site, if you like - opinions are appreciated!
