Title: Hosting/Disk Storage Questions
Post by: AngieP on July 08, 2005, 10:38:24 AM
I know when I signed up, the info said you could not change your userid; however, I don't remember it saying that you could not change your website name.  Can you?
Also, do you have to pick a website name in the beginning, or can you just sign up with the user ID and go back later and select a website name?
I have an interested person, who cannot readily think of a website name that is not taken.

Thanks for the info.

Angie

Post by: GSmith on July 09, 2005, 03:21:23 AM
You CAN change your website name, Angie; in fact, I have done so myself.  It may cost you a one time additional $10 a month, depending on when you create your new domain.
This is because every time you enter in a new domain name, you are actually setting up a new account, for which another $10 per month is charged.

Just go to your affiliate site and scroll down to Domains.  You can, at any time, add a new domain (many people have more than one now); put in the new domain name that you want, and then BE sure that you cancel the other one, the domain name that you no longer want.  Once you have cancelled it, as a further follow-up, it is a good idea to contact Customer Service direct to make sure they have receipt of your cancellation request.

It is even a good thing to promote with your downline the BENEFITS of having more than one domain, because every time they get a second or a third, YOU are earning another $1.00 per month off of each one of them.

As to your question is it necessary to create a domain name in the sign-up process, or can that be done afterwards, it IS necessry in the sign-up stage.  This, I am sure, is to protect those people who have a very specific name in mind that they WANT for their domain.  By securing it immediately when they sign up, this is assuring them that no one else will ever be able to capture or have that name.

Hi Angie,

I was wondering about that myself so I'm glad :D that you asked it.

And I'm real glad ;D that you answered it Gail, I think I'll copy & paste it so I don't forget it!

Speaking of copying and pasting......I have read SO MANY useful and helpful shares on this Forum and because I do not know how long a particular topic or thread of comments to a topic will be carried on the Forum, for the ones I want to be SURE not to lose, I have started my own separate WORD document of GDI FYI's for future reference.  I want to MAKE SURE I can refer back to them and that I not lose the valuable information.  I even have my WORD document for FYI's categorized according to specific topics so I can find one fast when I need it.

It is a great idea to 'save' Topics/Posts that you want to keep because, somw Topics are purged after a period (minimum 30 days) with no Posts.

I think it's $10 per month no matter how much bandwith we use.

Title: MySQL server questions
Post by: CarlKlapper on July 18, 2005, 11:38:45 AM
I have mentioned some of this in previous replies, but I think it should be in a topic of its own...

I noticed from php_info that we have MySQL support, but no default host, or user and password, is listed.

1. Do we have access to a MySQL server with our plan?
2. If so:
  a. What is the server host name or IP address?
  b. Do we have default username/passwords on that server?
  c. How do we find out and/or change our username/password?
  d. What privilieges do we have?
  e. How much space are we allotted?

Thanks for any help.

Carl

Hi Carl,

I don't think we have access to MySQL just yet. I emailed support a few months ago and asked them about it. They said they had no plans to expand on their webhosting services. I do hope this has changed. Maybe they are currently working on it and will provide it in the future.

The disk storage limit is 100 mb per account. As far as checking for the amount you have used, I'm not sure, I guess you will have to add up your file sizes.  :)

Hi Carl -

I can help a little - maybe.

Addressing your questions:

Quote

1. Yes - if I understand you correctly. There are five options to choose from in
setting up your website. Check in your members' area under "Domains" -

2.
    a. When you choose the "Hosting" option to set up your domain/website, you will
receive an e-mail containing the host info, password, etc.
You will need your own FTP software to upload your web pages to the server.

    b. Yes, as far as I can tell.

    c.  Depends which option you choose. You can change your password in your members' area -
but it may change the password for every domain you own - unsure.

    d.  Not sure what you mean - probably (again) depends on the option you choose

    e.  When using the Site Builder option, it's 100mgs - Can't seem to find that info for the other options.
It should be at least that much space, though.

Hope some of this helped -

Hi JD,

Actually I was talking about a MySQL (database) server.  The MySQL module is installed in PHP, but apparently it is not being used, at least not through the hosting plan.

To all,
I certainly hope that GDI reconsiders at least having an option of having a database with the premium hosting plan.  GDI could even allow an option of increasing the database allocation by suitable increments for each additional $10/month.  That way, an additional income stream is generated from current GDI domains instead of being lost to (hosting) competitors.  Further, the initial MySQL capability provides a wonderful lead-in to this income stream, as initial use of the database expands, prompting the purchase of the additional allocations.  One further suggestion: allocations for multiple domains could be combined, with those domains sharing a larger database.

What about Bandwidth? I don't think I'll be using much bandwidth on what is basically a single page site, but it's nice to know  for people who join just for a website.

I have also confirm with  Support,  MySQL is not supported now.
However looking forward for MySQL to be support soon.
I was hoping to set up a blog on the GDI server but the lack of MySQL prevents this.
Not sure if  100MB is enough for a blog, but should be worth a try.

Hi Folks,
I was looking for a 'back office' or 'control panel' which I have been used to having with other hosting plans. I do hope GDI will be offering this as I fear if we don't, we will not attract the serious website builders.  Business we attract into the GDI plan will want tracking on their sites without having to resort to adding free stats counters etc.  I was considering moving my main site over to GDI but I will be holding off until I know whether the back office/control panel will be available.

100megs is fine for most sites but would not be enough for my main site - I hope the options will expand as time goes on.

Website Builder provides you with 6 pages.  If you were to create your site using Frontpage, Dreamweaver or some other product, you would have the ability to create or use more pages!

Yes, but how can you find out how much of your allotted space you're using?

If I right click on my off-line website folder (exact mirror) I get two values:

Size
19.9 MB (20,942,631 bytes)
Size on disk
27.3 MB (28,721,152 bytes)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the difference is due to FAT allocation unit size and can vary greatly depending on the way the partition was formated.

So, is there a way to get a reading from .WS itself? Please post!

Only 6 pages?

Is this being changed with the new update that's happening today?

I personally don't need to use templates (I've been into internet publication part-time since 2000), but that sounds way too limiting.

I looked at some SiteBuilder examples before and noticed that its really easy to change the template by simply changing the URL (database driven?).

Woulnd't it make more sense to have a limit in the 1000s?

As I understand it 6 page limit with the site builder and a s much as you like with the hosting subject to the storage limit. I imagine you can buy extra disk space? My first site is hosted elsewhere as it has a lot more than 6 pages.

An updated is need regarding SQL availability.
Also, if we want any hope of attracting real webmasters, we need to be able to tell them what is and is not supported on our site.
We may not know what the stuff is ourselves, but we need better information to be readily available as to what is and is not supported.

Post by: KhristineH on August 22, 2005, 08:12:19 PM
A person can run phpinfo on the GDI hosting and will find all the information about the currently installed version of PHP and what it will support. This does not mean that the services the version of PHP is supporting are available for use too. mySQL is not available with the hosting package and neither are many other server technologies such as ASP.NET etc.

As a "real" webmaster (I prefer webmistress actually), ,my advice is don't get bogged down in thinking you can't attract us because there is no database access or other things. Personally, when I develop my site beyond the capabilities of the GDI hosting I will just point my domain to my own nameservers and hosting services.  I have all the bells and whistles there that I need.

100 MB is a nice sized hosting space. It is more then enough for most people and many many things can be done with it, through the website builder or hosting. GDI has added a guestbook and feedback page for you in the website builder. I think that's great, it's simple and nothing fancy but it's easy to use and it's very easy to admin on the back end. There is a good product here and it comes with more emails and space then a good portion of hosting out there for 10.00/mth. It is a great value for what it is.

Getting back to attracting webmasters/webmistresses, the business opportunity itself is the attraction. Making money with a business that finally had good value for a small price tag was what appealled to me and  in an industry I understood completely was a bonus! Marketing a top level domain name is no small thing either! If a webmaster turns their back on this opportunity because the hosting isn't powerful enough for them, they are missing the boat and wouldn't do much in the business anyway. You want a webmaster/webmistress who is a business builder. Who sees a good deal for many of their clients who have small needs and sees a great opportunity for other clients to have their own domain name and make money too. If that client needs more powerful hosting, it can be provided. The beauty of GDI is that it is $10.00/month. Anyone can afford that and are getting good value for their money in comparing apples to applies in hosting. When you start adding alot of technology to the hosting package there is going to have to be a willingness to see that $10.00/month raise in price. Technology is not free. It costs money. Database servers require more security to protect information and there is always the consideration of more bandwidth unless you like your sites loading like snails. There is alot to consider. I am sure GDI is taking all this into consideration.

For me, I have been playing with the sitebuilder and with the hosting to see just what and how much can be done with it. Sometimes more can be done then people think at first, especially if they are new to web design. As I said before, for now if I need more power for my .ws site (and I am sure I will) I will just point it to my nameservers when that time comes. This opportunity is so good, even using my own servers, I still don't mind paying GDI $10.00! The marketing materials they give you with your presentation website, the movie and the backoffice you have now are worth that alone!

More powerful hosting does require more of a control panel too as someone else has mentioned. If and when GDI expands to that, that will be an added expense for them as well. It's another cost and business doesn't stay in business if they continually eat cost. It gets passed on to the customer. GDI gives us alot folks for $10.00/month.

If anyone like me gives you a hard time about the simple hosting offered here, move on and don't waste your time. Their world is too small and their vision too narrow.

All the best,
Khristi

Thanks so much Cristian. I would love to be helfpful in any way to anyone that I can. I wish I had more time to spend on the forum then I currently do. I have been so busy with life in general. I am the single (for now anyway) mother of 4 and have been supporting  them alone for 9 years.  They are 22 (boy), 17(girl), 14(boy), 11(girl).  I am  preparing to move my family from Missouri to Colorado in a couple of months where I am getting  re-married(unless I turn into a complete coward! LOL)  after the first of the year. This means new husband, new home, new work environment etc. Lots of exciting and kind of scary changes. The only sad thing is my oldest son is not going. He is staying here. It's breaking my heart but he has to live his life where he is happiest the same as I do. He is working at building GDI too.

There is a great bunch of people on this forum and all so willing to help one another! It's really great because you can come here and not feel like you are disconnected from everyone.

Take care and let me know if I can be of assistance!

Hi Rich,

If you are using WebSite Builder, you are limited to 6 pages only.  Unfortunately, this is the system limit set forth by GDI.

However, if you want to make full use of your 100MB of webspace, I suggest you use a third party software like Dreamweaver or Frontpage in creating your websites.  Using these softwares or others like them allows you to create an unlimited number of webpages as long as they fit in 100MBs.

You have to select "WebSite Hosting" in the settings area of your domains and then check your emails for the settings which will contain your DNS server address, user ID, and password.  Next, you will need a FTP program inorder for you to upload all your webpages into GDI's server.  Enter the information contained in your email into the FTP program prior to uploading your files.

Have fun!

I believe with the new site builder you may have up to ten pages, but I haven't tried it -
Plus the Guestbook page and the Feedback page. That makes twelve in all.

Can anyone verify this? Has anyone "maxed out" their pages with Site Builder?

Just got a signup to someone who wanted a website.Yeah! Until they discovered an alternative- Yahoo Hosting - its starter package is only $11.95 with 2gb of storage and 25 email address as well as a host of other features - not to mention 24hr support. Oh and by the way they also give you a "free" domain name. How is GDI supposed to compete with that. Aside from the business opportunity is there any competive edge? At first I thought GDI was a good deal for the price.  ???

Hi SFonsesca -

I don't know anything about YHosting, so I would ask these questions -

Does Yahoo offer a way for the website to pay for itself? GDI does.
How many people, really, need 2gb of storage and 25 e-mail addresses for one domain?
Is the "free" domain name a Top Level Domain (like www.yoursitename.ws),
or something like www.yahoohosting.com/id#?#*%yourname (unprofessional-looking and hard to give to people) ?

Just some thoughts -

Title: Storage space for gallery
Post by: Roxanne G on September 23, 2005, 01:30:22 PM
Just an FYI - I have been going back and forth with support all week.  I have a windows media file that is 39 MB and the gallery is supposed to hold 100 MB.  After numerous emails to and from support, they had me email them the file and they tried to upload it to my gallery.  The following is what I received today from support.

Quote
Good Afternoon,

We apologize for this taking do long.  We have attempted to upload your file into your gallery and were unsuccessful. Only 10MB of a file can be uploaded at one time. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Kindest Regards,

So - if anyone is signing up intending to use a file larger than 10 mb on their site, it can not be done.

Dear Roxanne!

This is what I know already for a few months - from tat time I wanted to upload my Photo Tutorial in compleete with music and everything what's going with it. I actually could upload only app 7,9 MB to my gallery at one time and not more. I've got from the support that time app the same answer, but the size was smaller - they said 8 MB can be uploaded at one time. That's why my Photo Tutorial never served its purpose at all and I doubt it ever would so I'm preparing myself to take it off and throw it to the garbage ... Actually I never asked support to upload it for me as I knew without any questioning that that will not be done ...

Thank you for posting this info anyway!

Post by: ThaisMendes on October 20, 2005, 03:54:08 AM
Hi,

My 2 cents:   (from close-to-a-pro)

This is the first time I heard about PHP at GDI forum/website.
I was very, very sad to think that I had not access to it... I browsed member's site showcases and saw no traces of programming being used...

I've been here for less than a week, but I have the impression that we have more website newbies than pro's... and the pro's sometimes promote a dot .com website on their profile...
I pass my mouse over that globe image on the left side of the posts, to spy other .ws sites for ideas as how my referals could use them - family albuns? pet page? what do people like? I forgot what it was to be a newbie and enjoy the pleasure of just sharing my simple thoughts... would like to get that back... I see they are sometimes more popular than my "HTML tutorial" or "business ideas" scratch..  :-\

Still, without programming capabilities, GDI offer would left something to desire for the pro's... it's a great price, sure, for domain and hosting, specially with the business opportunity, but if you are going to use the domain alone, with forwarding, your might as well just say you are here for the MLM alone, or am I wrong?? And what would be the point of your referals buying more then one domain/website if we all just wanted to get in the business opportunity?

On the other side, with PHP, I will stick with GDI and buy my domain when my trial period is over... because I can do many things here wether I get other people to see that or not - it's their loss... I can win so much from what I put on my website, even though I have no business of my own to promote.

And there's just so much to do with your website!! I could post some great teplate sites here (with hundreds of great-looking, professional templates)  and a visual HTML editor "Web Weaver EZ" - free edition (do a search on google to download), which newbies could use to build GREAT GDI websites...
And with some search engine optimization research, plus, google adsense ads (or any paying ad for that matter), GDI pays for itself with 0 referers...

But, people will be even more free to create and to EARN if they could read Amazon products' feeds, do clickbank searches (affiliate selling), put a small forum, or use "include('top-navigation.html')", for example, to add the same header and a footer on all site pages... that's what I would most miss, while updating my site pages.. imagine adding a new link to 10, 20 pages, one by one..

Someone mentioned promoting .ws websites to schools, etc., groups in general.. wouldn't they use it better by havind some dinamic content? Like a messages board more advanced than the guestbook??

I think newbies here now can get a picture of what their "pro" referals could do, like some of you said.. even if you don't understand quite what it is, we have to know what to tell them..

What got me truly interested in GDI was the possibility to refer people for a great offer they could enjoy with either 0 or thousands of referers... tell them about google adsense, affiliate programs, etc., which can surely be used with GDI websites, but also would be good it they could: authorize paypal downloads automaticaly... using free website scripts... this last one depends of having PHP (any programming, simply put)..

Finaly,
A database would be great, and could be priced differently than the normal price... we would all expect that, I think... but not having that option at all is a bit dissappointing.. anyway, one could always use a flat file instead, for most jobs... as long as we can use PHP!  ;D

As far as what concerns Yahoo hosting, I browse many webmaster sites and web hosting forums (hey, great for my advertising with signatures!!!! Haven't had the time to do that this week..), and Yahoo is NOT recognized as great hosting company, like they are as a search engine.. people (clients we lose) do tend to think they would have recognition in specific services just because they are so popular in gerenal, but we have to "show" them that they will do better with us.... and for that matter, we need to show what we earn from GDI subscription directly, with referals, and also from the GDI services (ou websites)..
Show that great pet website of yours, with links to: paying ads, amazon pet products, books abouts pets, clickbank e-books ready to download (which they will do after buying and leaving you cash credit!).

I'm in a hurry to leave all the links, if people ask I can put later, but if you just do a search on google typing all the terms I used, you can learn what are all those things....

Plus, feel free to contact me anyone through this forum.

(site is not up, I want to build it with those templates I told you about, I'm still not sure how to share content resources between my former website - if you would like to click the globe on the left to visit it, there is an HTML tutorial, but it was still under development.. I might bring all content to siteworks.ws.. but don't know if the terms "internet business" will rate better on search engines, that's holding me.. I will surely mantain both domains.. and if I can get them to profit from affiliates and adsense clicks, I will make more!!)

Title: Re:FTP Hosting FrontPage Issue
Post by: ThaisMendes on October 21, 2005, 01:44:25 PM
How do I use front page to upload a web page for hosting. I used the IP address and everything but it wouldn't work right. It said it published it but when I went to my .ws It still said under construction.

Please Help,
KevinJaynes

I am not familiar with Front Page, but if it said published maybe you don't have an "index.html" page??

The hosting server might prevent people from browsing other pages if you don't have an "index.html" page for security reasons...

Julio,

Yes, you have 100M of storage available to you.  However you cannot monitor it unless you use an FTP program.  If you begin to exceed it, the system will not let you upload.  I know this to be true because I was adding some pages this past week and exceeded my limit.

Post by: Kris_M on November 09, 2005, 02:25:14 PM

Not sure if  100MB is enough for a blog, but should be worth a try.

100MB is TONNES for a blog.  Bear in mind that blogs are mostly text, including HTML code (more text).  If there are images, they are reused on every page.  This means *very* little space.  My first website had about 30 pages and dozens of images.. and it all fit on a 1.44 MB 3¼" floppy disk.  :)

It will take you a very long time to make a blog fill up 100MB of space.

Thanks Tatjana

As a 'Newbie' myself, that list is going to be very helpful, not only to me, but I imagine to a lot of other newbies as well.

I am still finding out new things about this GDI business (I just look forward to the time when I can do this business 'full time' with a J.O.B. getting in the way!)

I have copied the list into word, and I think I am just starting to get my 'reference' folder organised!

WHAT A GREAT BUSINESS! THANKS GDI!

I want to know the complete features of the hosting

I used SmartFTP, which is free online< to transfer my own website I created with Microsoft Front Page 2003. The transfer is seamless and there is plenty of room for further growth. I am deeply impressed with what I get for $10.00 a month.

I had trouble Uploading to the GDI Server at first too.
I downloaded some software which allowed me to create a folder on the server.
You have to create a folder that is the same name as your domain -     yourdomain.ws for example.
Once you have created this folder you can then use the same software I mentioned earlier to Upload all your Web Pages to the server.
BTW your home page should be saved as index.html

hope this helps

Your HTML stuff goes in there.

yeah there is, but I was just using FrontPage at first to try to Upload. GDI admin referred me to Download.com cos I was uploading to the sever, not my folder on the server, you see there are limits to what you can do with Frontpage, no folder view etc. The software I use now gives me both My Computer and My Server on 1 screen and I just Drag n Drop either way...
BTW I use WEB CEO now, it even showed me how to do the entire process.. GDI were not very helpful, too vague for me cos I knew nothing of the process.
Like anything, once you have done it once, it is easy.

Nope sorry not in the site builder option. In the hosted option you should be able to set up scripting but I am not sure as to the extent as I have never tried this option. Email support ws_support@wsdomains.ws

Be patient!  You must wait approx...24 hours from the time you decide to use the hosting feature.  After that...you will see your directory page and will have the ability to upload your files.

Hello,
As far as I am aware you can not change your Domain name, what you can do is direct 1 domain to another.. So person puts in address 1 and ends up at Address 2..

The other option would be to replace 1 Website with the other..  If you are using SiteBuilder you will need to do a lot of Copy + Paste for this, but if you are Hosting your Website, which I see in another post, you are not... But if you are hosting for your New Website, you can just Upload it to the SERVER and you will be fine.. NEW WEBSITE, same address..

You must purchase a new domain name.  After purchasing the new one, cancel the old one.  Go to your Members area and purchase the new one.  Then click on support, choose canceling from the drop down menu.  From there let Support know that you want to cancel your domain name.  Make sure you tell them which one you want to cancel and it will be done almost immediately.

Also make sure you have set your Domain to Hosting...  If you can access your sitebuilder you are not set for hosting...

Title: Your .WS Website: Are You Hackable?
Post by: Cleveland_Paige on February 28, 2006, 09:52:27 AM
Greetings To All New .WS Owners and Affiliates:

I've just built my website, started on the date of 2006-FEB-26th, and as each day passes, I have newer more inventive ways of causing my website to appear more appealing and representable.  However, the question that does come into view, in my years of Internet Website Forums and Community Boards that I presently partner with, and administer, is once your site is published, and presented to the world wide web as a whole, is it hackable?

Knowing that websites on the Net do fall under such malicious attacks and threats globally, what steps and stages, and procedures...protocols, if you will, are set in place currently to prevent the "downfall" of our property (internet/virtual real estate in the forms of .WS sites) during such instances?

We all have friends and foes that are either there to help us or harm us, and frankly, it does exist, especially during a time when hacking is and has become a world wide public enemy #1, apart from malicious programs like trojans, spyware, etc.

Thank you all for your comments on this matter.  Looking forward to intelligent and responsive feedback.

Cordially Yours,

Mr. Cleveland A. Paige, Jr.

Greetings and Good Morning All GDI Affiliates and .WS Owners:

I've been reading the Copyrights Booklets, PDFs and the sorts.

What is the approach of names of your websites, of the .WS Domain name endings?  My site, for instance, has microsoft in the domain name .  Am I in violation, and if so, do I need to make changes on my site as far as the Home page name, or should I keep it as is?  Would like some advice, as to stay and steer clear from any legal troubles.

When making the name, I checked to see if that name is available, and it was, so, I registered it.  But, I don't want to get into any difficult legal issues.

Thanks for your answers, links, and connections of information, at your leisure.  There may be some copyright paragraphs and policies that I may have failed to read up on, and may have missed or overlooked them.  Appreciate the assistance, guidance and help. ;)

Cordially Yours In Success and Achievements,

This is the first time I heard about PHP at GDI forum/website.
I was very, very sad to think that I had not access to it... I browsed member's site showcases and saw no traces of programming being used...

Still, without programming capabilities, GDI offer would left something to desire for the pro's...

On the other side, with PHP, I will stick with GDI and buy my domain when my trial period is over...

HI, I know the GDI website doesn't say anything about having php capabilities but we do as long as we are using the hosting option. I haven't created my main .ws site yet but I have created several pages that I use to promote and I am currently using several php scripts on my .ws domain and they work perfectly. I am thinking of building my entire main site using php mainly for ease of updating links etc later on. So far I am using php contact forms, php rotator scripts, and I am working on adding a few others as needed. If you would like to see examples of the php scripts im using message me and i'll send you the pages and the code if you want it. Cheers! Les

Hi,

I have several websites and never got any attacks on one of them :-)

I hope my luck keeps going as I know it may be possible to get hacker attacks on websites...

But how many persons who come to your site and could hack it on anyway will make it at start
like 1% of those persons I think...

So is the chance getting your site hacked same as get hit by a thunder?

This information can be located on your hosting site.  For example:  http://www.website.ws/USERID/hosting

This is the information you may be looking for!

GDI Premium Web Hosting is the ideal home for your site if you want full creative control. Our Fully managed shared web hosting accounts include all of the folowing:

Ultra Fast Dual 3.6 GHz CPU Pentium 4 Servers
 Fully managed 24/7 site monitoring
 1 GIGAbit, multi-homed tier-1 carriers
100 meg disk storage per account
 10 gigs of monthly bandwidth

Hope this information helps you!

Frank

10 gigs of monthy bandwidth??? Wow, that IS good! I know I won't be using nearly that much, but it's great to know how much bandwidth we can use. That's more than my Cable ISP allows me to use per month.  ;D

I have never tried but with an .htaccess file you could probably get a cgi script to run with a comma seperated DB. Perhaps support will answer. As I recall .htaccess is supported.

Hi Nick,

if you have ftp access to your site, write this using your preferred text editor:

<?
  phpinfo();
?>

save it as phpinfo.php and upload it to your site

I have a sample here of what it does:

http://plainandsimple.ws/phpinfo.php

look for SCRIPT_FILENAME, it wil show the path of phpinfo.php where you can infer the location of your other files.

Well, I'm kind of sad now. I was getting into all this .ws hosting stuff, what with the "everyone can have a web page now" take on things. But it seems, you can have web pages if you 1) want a fairly simple and static site, or 2) are willing to take the time to figure out how to either force things or find workarounds.

I admit I was lulled into this by a friend of mine, but the first thing I found was the name I wanted was already taken...  :-\ Then I find out I have to provide my SSN. Then I find there's no MySQL (a BIG requirement for me). What PHP modules are availble (I noticed it appears to be running 4.4)? There is or isn't support for a CGI-driven script? Then there are aspects of the very few pre-built features don't work (feedback plug-in, for one).

It just seems the bells and whistles and selling/marketing aspects of a real hosting service just aren't there. The focus is on the business side, and I'd just really prefer to be a hosting reseller, allowing those that want to pursue the business side to do so.

Perhaps I'm a minority in here, and most everyone else here is also present for the business aspects. Perhaps the percentage of those looking to do full-fledged web sites are in the minority here. It just seems the more I read, the more I'm finding this may not be ready for serious web developers/programmers. It was built and is being marketed around its network marketing business aspects, and I'm more of a web developer than a business-person...

I guess my hopes of this being for everyone were a bit short lived... :( I mean, aside from the business aspect, what makes .ws hosting better than say, hostasaurus, where, although you get half the bandwidth, you get twice the storage, a mysql database, and all for only $6.50 per month?

Could someone please let me know if I'm off track here?

Thanks.

Hello Keith,

I just read your post in regards to php, plug-ins, cgi scripts and all the other bells and whistles.  When I first signed up for GDI a year ago, I was looking for a few more of the bells and whilstles as well.  I am not a seasoned web developer as you are, but there were a few more things I were looking for when I began creating my websites.  Once I figured out that there were not cgi-bins, ect., I settled for what the product offers....an opportunity and used other tools and resources in order to be somethat creative.

What I have found is, for the majority here, this is an excellent money maker.  GDI offers an individual the opportunity to have an inexpensive home-based business and a decent product to market to the average individual.

Personally, I market both the business aspects and the hosting.  It all depends on what the individual is searching for or what their needs may be.  Other hosts may offer this and may offer that.  GDI offers a little of this and that along with a home based business where one can truly earn a handsome residual income over time.  I personally believe that GDI is the perfect home-based business for the product and monies invested.

Frank

Frank
Thanks Frank. That's what I was kind of figuring as I was running it through my mind from different angles. But your comments help me to know I'm thinking of it correctly. I'll run it through its paces for the next 6 months to a year, and see what comes of it. I'll create the pages, optimize them and promote them, and treat it like I would any other site I'd like to make sales on, and see how it goes.

In the meantime, I'll pray that GDI beefs up their web hosting arsenal a bit. And I'll read up on what their history has been with adding features (perhaps I could get a job with them and develop some PHP utilities, or at least integrate some others ;D).

I'll also need to find out more about what exactly their hosting services are... There's quite a bit that's not on the /hosting page.

Thanks again.

Hello,

Domain Name System (DNS) is used to convert domain names into IP addresses.

To learn more, type "what is DNS" in your search engine.

This afternoon my site won't seem to load if I enter the the www. in my domain name.

Alll links are find as long as don't include the w's

For example http://www.giftshop.ws hangs up and won't load but
http://giftshop.ws loads no problem.

I just wanted to know if it was something to do with hosting or my coding.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance.

Julie -  if I go to your site I get the following message:-
This is the placeholder for domain giftshop.ws. If you see this page after uploading site content you probably have not replaced the index.html file.

This page has been automatically generated by Plesk.
So you have not uploaded your files to the correct place or your DNS settings are incorrect

I was just wondering what exactly does the package offer in terms of bandwidth, storage capacity, etc.

Also, I am planning to use Wordpress here.  Is that possible?  How?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

See http://www.website.ws/USERID/hosting for the first questions and you would have to use the hosting option for Wordpress.
You will need scripting capability so you would have to use .htacess.

You need an FTP program like CuteFTP or WSFTP and then you put in the address and transfer the files. Some programs like Frontpage and Hotdog have built in FTP facilities.

I actually have my own server since I do that on the side anyways. One issue that I had from the start with gdi is I knew that their webhosting was not going to be that great BUT as far as the income opportunity I think it is fine if that is what you are looking to do. Now if you are trying to market to more knowledgable people as far as web designers and other web hosts then you will be stuck. What I offer my members is the option to host with me as I have unlimited space and I do not charge for this service at all as long as they are on my team. Now most gdi members do not access to their own servers but some may.

GDI I do not see having a real control panel like cpanel with an x or x2 skin etc but they could in the future but I highly doubt it. Once people start to be able to create db's and host scripts it will cause a world of irritants for them. Most people trying to upload forums and other tpyes of scripts mostly do not know how to do it and then the gdi support will be blanketed with emails from people who may not know what they are doing.

No matter how you look at it I pay my $10 a month and soon to be free for the home based business only. I do not plan on hosting with the gdi servers even though they seem fast I do my own search engine optimization and need keyword tracking etc that I see never being supported.

I have checked that the address is right.

In the back office click on Domains and then underneath your domain name click on Change Settings.

A new window pops up and choose Domain & Email Forwarding.  Then just fill in the blanks.

I just purchased a .ws domain.
I thought it was taken 'cause the link already has his page with general information about this gdi project.
Well, the info on that site was from website.ws hisself.
They had a great site, and changes everytime I refresh the page.
Is this a standard template which I can use by only change my name for the affiliate?

Hope to hear from you soon!

You have to use the site builder

OR

Use some propietary software such as front page or dream weaver or hot dog and upload using an FTP package.

You can build using the site builder and then view source and copy it and upload to a host

Hi Karen H,

Yes, it should work since we are given disk space of 100MB.
What is your internet connection speed? That could be the reason.

If it still doesn't work, you can try uploading files to free file hosting places like filefactory.com
Then just link to it from your GDI website.

I tried changing mine and contacted .WS support about it, they told me it was to late to change my domain name unless I deleted my account and re-registered in 14 days time, but the problem with that was I would of lost my whole downline in the process, so it was to late for me, but still it was the business which attracted my downline not my name, so now I tell newly interested one's to choose their domain name wisely because it cannot be changed later.

And another issue you may have on the domain name you wanted to change it to, check it up to see if it is available, it maybe gone already.

This has become a recurring question.  The correct answer is:

No, you cannot change your domain name once you purchase it.  However, you can purchase a new domain name from your member's area (same account, no need to delete your account), cancel the domain name you do not want using the "CONTACT SUPPORT" feature which is also located in your member's area.

Some things to keep in mind:

You will not receive a refund.  The domain name will be released back to the GDI domain pool on your monthly anniversary date (which is the date you purchased the domain name, not neccessarily the date you joined GDI).  For example, if you joined GDI today or purchased a new domain name today, May 18th.  Then June 18th, July 18th (and so on) are your monthly anniversary dates.   Remember, every domain name that you purchase will cost you $10 USD/month.  You can have as many as your want or just one.  Your choice.  Hope this helps and that it all makes sense to you!

Hi Nelson,

There is no problem. When people type your domain name with .ws, they will go to your site.
That's why is good to register with .ws because it's still not yet crowded and you can easily get a domain name of your choice.

I want to place music on my website, but it just seems we don't have the MB compacity to hold and play that much music, I really think we need more MB storage so we can offer visitors to our website the chance to at least enjoy their visit and to also see that the GDI product offers more or even matches other hosting places, I see a lot of other hosting places offer a lot more MB storage and for free even, so I would like to think that we as direct sellers of domain names and websites should also be provided with the MB storage to go along with it.

Hello Shaun,

Personally, I think it's best to have a domain name that's relevant to the product or service your Website will provide.

Having a particular keyword phrase in your domain name will help with search engine optimization.

Title: Re: Domain Questions

Gail Smith
Texas

I have a follow-up question. I have a domain that was aproved but I cancelled it. Now I would like to use it insteadf of the one I am now using. Am I permitted to do that and how?

Hello everybody

I am new to GDI and have some questions that should have come to my mind before purchasing the domain name.

First thing first . So let me tell what i know and think (speculate) about all about GDI and GDI Business :-

1.Having purchased the domain name for $10 from GDI i have two options

  a) host my website with this domain name through GDI itself and this does not invole any additional cost or
  b) host my website with this domain name through some other company , say kiosk.ws.

2.I have to pay $10 every month to GDI to keep my ownership of the domain name .

3.The website that i host through GDI should be devoted to promotion of GDI business itself and nothing else .

4.I can construct my website using the sitebuilder of GDI .

5.If i build my website using sitebuilder , it automatically get hosted through GDI.

Now my questions are

1.Is it a true business if it is restricted to seling of l domain name on behalf of GDI ? Why people need domain name at all ? To do their own business ,say sell their own product or service or promote their referral links etc., am I right ?

2. If I host my website through GDI , how many subdomain and ad on domains can I launch under the same domain name ?

3. Is my impression that GDI hosted website is compelled to promote GDI product i.e, GDI domain name and nothing else right or wrong ?

I will try my best to answer your questions or most of them.

1.  First and foremost, as a GDI affliate you are purchasing an the entire line products or services including the business opporturnity.  This includes the domain name, email address, hosting, website builder (all for $10 per month).  Everyone needs to own a piece of Internet Real Estate (they just do not realize it).  That's exactly what a domain name is (Internet Real Estate).  It identifies you and/or your business.  And yes, it is a true business even if there is only one domain.  GDI has the exclusive rights to the .ws extension, that's what they sell.

2.  GDI does not provide the typical contol panel.  Therefore, no sub-domains are available.

3.  You are not obligated or required to promote GDI with your website(s).  That what most people do.  Your website can be about a hobby, another business, family, etc.

Hope that answers your questions

Frank

Post by: MartinLauritsen on August 01, 2007, 05:54:00 PM
Hi

I have been wrestling with this for a while. I want to publish some files and make them available by download through my site. This is very important to me and one of the main reasons I wanted a website. I want people to be able to download my files and then be thanked by way of a thank you page. How is the thankyou.html file hosted and how are my product/article files hosted for download? I cannot find anywhere to upload my files. i am using the inbuilt sitebuilder and all that allows me to do is graphics and small media files (100mb is not much). If anyone can help me here it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Marty

You can try theses. http:website.ws/kvmlm2/ws.dhtml?sponsor= Insert your user name here &template=

Place                 1,2,3,4,5 is template numbers just change the number to what site you want. Be sure to remove everything but your user name after =      (Then put) & template= 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 either one you chose . I hope this helps. Eric

Log into your Member's area, click on support and follow the instructions to cancel your domain (not your account).  Then order the new domain.  If you are in your 7-day trial period, it should be a simple process.  If you are outside your 7-day period, you can still cancel, you will have to pay for the new domain.  It's all in your Member's area.

LOL..I thought I was the only one that wanted to do that! When u g 2 my site, the movie starts playing immediately. However, I had to go into domains. Under  DNS Setting, click on URL forwarding. I have my site forwarded to "http://freedom.ws/youraffilliatename/show_dvd" The only catch is that you have to have the forwarding option on. And, unfortunately, you will have to forward your email to somewhere.

You will receive a $1 for every domain name, in this particular case that's $3. Not bad, eh?!

The DNS information is used with the place where the domain was registered so that anyone looking for the domain goes to the correct webserver.

Title: Re: Domain Names
Post by: NRoberts on October 19, 2007, 08:13:31 AM
Hi John,

I am relatively new at GDI (Day 9) but I'm pretty sure this'll help:

1.  Go to your main login page:  http://www.movie.ws/members/?userid=USERID
Remember to substitute your own USERID

2.  Login to the main control panel.

3.  Go down the menu on the left and click on "Domains"

4.  This will take you to a page where you should see the default setting for your new domain which reads:
     "Manage your Domains"
           My Domains!

There are five settings you can choose from with your new domain. You can alter the options by clicking the "Change Setting" button. This will place you on a screen (Green Buttons) which gives you the option to select one of the following:

1.  SiteBuilder
2.  Domain and Email Forwarding
3.  High Quality Hosting
4.  Parking Service
5.  Advanced Users Nameservers

If I understand correctly, you want to use your own application to build your site and merely want GDI to host it for you? In this case you select Option 3.

However, to ensure that you receive the best "expert" advice in a step-by-step format I highly recommend the following website:

1.  http://www.gdi-made-easy.ws  (contains just about every 'how to' pertaining GDI business/services one could possibly imagine and so much more)
2.  http//www.website.ws/YOURUSERNAME/hosting (for more info on the hosting aspect etc.)

Hope this helps, good luck!

Nicci

Hi Mona,

The FREE refers to the 7-day free trial.
So anyone can sign up for free and use the domain name and sitebuilder to build their website.
After 7 days, if they want to continue using GDI, they will be charged $10/month.

Hope that helps.

Try to copy and paste the source code from the template unto your page editor. Hit View, come down to Source, Copy and Paste the html code, and then paste it to HTML area of the page editor of the GDI page editor. Hit the submit button and see what happens. Take some time to understand what i am telling you here and it should work.

No, you cannot transfer a domain as a GDI Affiliate.  You can only release the domain, then someone else can register.

Any domains that you personally register, the commission will go to your upline sponsor.  A technique you should consider using is have an immediate family member sign up under you, then any domains that you want or need can be purchased by them, then the commission will stay in the same household.  Hope that makes sense to you.

Hi Irina,

No, your IP number is the unique identification for your computer,
you can check yours by simply going to this site:
http://www.ipchicken.com/

Your "code" -- I assume is your GDI access code?
That's your GDI user id. It's the same as the one you use to sign in to this forum.

Hi everyone,

Ok so I joined GDI just about a month ago and I've just got finished building my website and I'm ready to start advertising it. I have a problem with my domain name though. I use a hosting service other then GDI's, but I want to use my .ws domain name with my website. How can I set it up to be in sync with the .mac hosting service I use? I looked into the help section and it said something about having to put in a CNAME. What's a CNAME? Can someone please help me? By the way I use iWeb to build my websites, then publish them onto .mac hosting if that helps.

Thanks

Title: Re: Domain Questions
Post by: RobertCoaster on March 09, 2008, 07:52:06 PM
Hi Paul,

Not sure about the Cname question but the easiest way to use your GDI domain name with your other hosting service is to change the DNS to forward to that service. Click on "Domain" in the GDI backoffice then click on "change dns" & then "automatic forwarding service"

Take care,
Robert

I just signed up so haven't gotten to the website part of it yet.  But I was wondering after reading some of the posts here if we only need the one page for the video to be played....it won't matter how much space we have will it.  Can we just leave it the way it is with just the video on it.  I haven't seen any of the others yet as I don't know where to find them.  I find this all confusing to say the least and am not that knowledgeable about it.  But what I get is we need to get people to watch the video which is on our web page and if they sign up, it goes on our line.  But we can't find our own people or send out our own emails but must use their email and they send them out.  The more I read here, the more confused I get.  Shirley

Once you are a member, you have a members website where you have lots of tools to promote your website. You go to the invite section and you can use their system to invite all your friends or associates. You need to invite only those people that you know. You can also invite people using your e-mail too ,but with the invite system you can track who has opened your invitation and if they had watched the movie. Is up to you. I recommend that you go over the members website.

Title: "hosting my website"
Post by: Jess E on May 14, 2008, 03:25:01 PM
Hi guys,

New here at GDI, and anxious to start on my website, but here is the problem.

GDI offers you two ways to build your site, sitebuilder and basic hosting.

I wanted to use basis hosting as I have my own templates and know how to use html to build my site.

However, and this is a big however, after I downloaded  FilleZilla, the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) I got stuck.

GDI did sent me the necessary information for me to use fillezilla and I did get in, but once I was in I was stuck.

My site is in HTML, so I thought that it would be easy enough for me to paste and copy my site's html onto filezilla and
presto, transfer my site to GDI, but no dice.  There is no place on filezilla for me to paste my site's info.

Figure I am missing a step here, but cannot figure it out.

What I need is a step by step dummies instructions as to how to use GDI's basic hosting, and what to do once I do get into
the FTP site.
If GDI is using a different FTP, then please let me know so I can download that sucker too, and try using that one.

Please, someone, take me by the hand and lead me, step by step, on how to use the basic hosing option, to include on
how to transfer my site to GDI.

Thanks,

Jess

Ok so I signed up with google adwords. I assigned my URL which is www.nathanflanders.ws
Ok, so what? Well the problem is, that when you type my URL, it redirects it to my HUGE referral URL, and Google adwords will decline you if your link redirects.

Will someone help me with this issue, so that I still have the same page as www.nathanflanders.ws but just so It won't redirect and will stay www.nathanflanders.ws in the navigation bar?

Thanks in advance,
Nathan

Title: Selling domains / hosting
Post by: TravisUhl on April 04, 2009, 07:06:49 AM
Hi, I remember when I signed up for this it was not only for getting as many people as you can to sign up and those people to get as many as they can but also for selling domains / hosting. I was wondering where your "plans" or rates or whatever you want to call them are. Am I wrong about that? Doesn't this company host websites? is there a different "home page" for hosting your own website if your not trying to make money off this but just simply trying to build a website for yourself?

thanks, travis

Title: Parked web pages
Post by: GMcKenzie on April 16, 2009, 05:34:36 AM
Hi All

I've not long signed up and remember I previously came across a way to change the parked domain replicated sites individually for each of:

http://www.freedom.ws/
http://www.website.ws/
http://www.my.ws/
http://www.money.ws/
http://www.movie.ws/

This means depending on what people are interested in (Business/websites/etc) you could point them to different sites etc.  Now I can't find it - can anyone help please?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Gavin

Gavin,

Login to your GDI members area with your username/password at www.website.ws/members.  Look on the menu list, located on the left side of page and you will see the link "My Replicated Sites".  Once you click there, you will see all of the choices that you have.

Hello, I want to create an Article Directory and a few pages to redirects.

I am wondering if GDI supports creation and use of MySQL and running of PHP.

It would be a shame if they didn't.

Hi to all!
I would like to know it, too! MySQL - Yes or No?

Regards!

Hello, i'd like to ask if i can use GDI as a photo host, like imageshack?

I mean, I wint to hosto some photos on GDI so I can link them on a squido lens I'm building, but I don't want these photos to show on my site.

I tried to copy the photo URL from my FTP client but them, when I put its address on a page, it asked my login name/pass to access the ftp server.

How can I make this happen?
Thanks,
Andre

Hi

I also would like to set up an Article Directory to improve traffic to my site.
I need php access and curl extensions loaded

When I try to get my directory loaded on to the server I get the following error message

"Oops... Curl extension is not loaded. Please contact your webhost with this error message."

I have done this on every other website I own on other hosting platforms and this is very much
a basic, standard requirement for those services and they are cheaper than this.

Why would GDI bother advertising their hosting as basic when it does not offer the basic hosting service?

I am not trying to be critical here as I am a long standing and generally satisfied member but this service
has been requested by many for years and is still not being attended to. Static GDI sites just will not rate
with the search engines if the tools to do so are not available. Many will have sites that no-one visits, please
again we ask to give us mysql and php access. Surely it is not too hard in 2010.

Cheers
Marty

Can anyone tell me why my html is not working with the text editor. I am working with click bank, is that the problem? They tell me to paste the hoplinks in the text editor. I have managed once to use the source button and get one to work, but now when I preview my edits, only the html code shows up, no hoplink.

How can I host my page here with a .ws domain name?  I currently am paying the $10 a month an all I can use is my replicated site because it is set to change my name servers to my other domain.. I do not want that I want to host one of my sites through hostgator like I am doing now and I would like to host a site through GDI as well with a .ws domain.

open my computer. at address bar type ftp://yourdomainname and enter. popup window will appear and ask for your username and password. insert username and password and you can see one folder. click at folder and just delete content in the folder. if you build your own site, just copy and paste all your page on this folder. make sure home page must be index.html or index.htm. latest news GDI allow to use php file but i not very sure about that. if anyone know.. will you tell me?

Hey guys,

I received these 3 questions from a prospect, could you please help in answering them so that I can in return help him more accurately?

here's his questions:

1. how much Bandwidth does GDI give to an active member?

2. Does GDI provide a cPanel? does GDI offer Fantastico?

3. Does GDI allow Subdomains? http:\\subdomain.domain.ws as an example

Thanks in advance for your prompt reply.

Regards

Tony

Hi I doubt GDI would allow sub domains as that would be diametrically opposed to what they are trying to make their primary income from.

GDI does allow sub-domains, included in the $10 pm. I have a sub-domain, and both my main domain and my sub-domain sites are built on the WordPress option now offered by GDI.
