Title: How do I ftp with GDI?
Post by: DavidBlood on February 22, 2006, 07:28:08 AM
Hello, I've built a personal web site that I want to host with GDI, but while I can find the links and set up for the online site builder I can't find any to links, set up, or instructions to ftp my site.  So how do I bypass the site builder and use ftp with GDI???

Thanks,

David

Hello David,

First you must go into your Members Area and set your domain to premium hosting.  You will then receive an email stating that your hosting is activated.  However, you must wait 12-24 hours for the domain to do its thing through the DNS servers.  After that type your URL into your browser, if you paged is indexed, you will know and see it.  You will then need an FTP program to upload your files. There are numerous FTP programs on the Net (some free, some not).  Once uploaded your pages will be displayed.  It is a very simple process if you follow these steps and have a little patience.

Frank

p.s.  On the forum here, there is a search tool.  If you conduct a search of the topic or question that you have, more than likely it has already been discussed and you will find the answer to your question very quickly.  No waiting for someone to respond.  How niice is that?

OK, next question. I ftp'd my site and all seemed to go well, BUT when I put in my URL http://davidblood.ws it gets redirected to http://website.ws/davidblood  I did not set this redirect, I think I saw somewhere that it's an automatic redirect if you're not using your site, which is fine.  But I am using it now so how do I stop the redirect?  I did a search for "redirect" but didn't find anything helpful.

Thanks again,

David

Hi William as far as I am aware you do not loose any work you have done in the site builder
if you swap to the redirect. It would be senseless if you did.

I assume you switched to hosting or else you would not have been able to FTP. It sometimes takes 24-48 for the DNS to propagate. Wait a few more hours  >:( and try again. If it still does not work contact support.

Still my site does not come up on the web. That is my WS site. Does it take longer if we are International? :P
just a thought. Or is that a silly thought?  :(!

Thanks Rod, You're right, it's working now, just needed a little more patience.

I was looking last night at others web sites in the Showcase your Website section and many of them seem to be company made lead capture pages.  It made me wonder if someone drops out is that what their site is replaced with?

Whether company made lead pages or not most of them seem to be just about GDI and with all the great pages GDI already has set up for us I have to wonder why so many are doing that.  Sure my web site talks about GDI, but it also talks about much more, it's a personal website.  Like the GDI training manual says I also think the best way to promote GDI is OFFline.  Today I got a message from GDI listing some great ideas for what people can do with their web sites, just my opinion but I think things like showcasing what you can do with a personal, family, hobby, or special interest website would be far more effective in promoting GDI than more sites just about GDI would be.

I also have a concern about people using there web sites JUST to promote GDI.  Did you ever here of Sky Biz.  Of course the main reason it was shut down was because it was a front loading scam and GDI is NOTHING like that, but the FTC was also looking at it because all distributors seemed to be doing with their websites was promoting Sky Biz rather than developing other types of content.  I hope that doesn't happen here and I really hope that GDI strongly encorages other types of content that really showcases different uses for web sites and that GDI members listen.

O.K. I'll get off my soap box now!

David

Now I am newbie here in GDI .Just wonder if I can use PHP and mySQL servers here in their webhosting space they provide to us ?
Then we can have more features...most of my clients requires that.

Or we can request GDI for giving us that option later ?

Title: Accessing files after FTP
Post by: HerbertSpringer on April 04, 2006, 07:18:28 PM
Hello :)

I'm looking for some help in accessing files after uploaded via FTP
for the sake of editing changes.

The sitebuilder templates are just not what I want and I'd
like to build my own site and FTP it but my question is
how would I access these files for modifications?

Also I want to implement lead capture and with sitebuilder
it won't co-operate with my autoresponder forms.

Would someone please take the time to explain how I could accomplish this.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Post by: DonWiggins on April 17, 2006, 03:12:45 PM
I just published my web site last night. I was able to FTP to it then. I am not able to FTP into it right now. Any ideas? I know the log in and password are correct. Is it because my DNS settings haven't perpetuated? I am able to ping my dmain name and it does resolve to the correct address. Also I get a page cannot be displayed error when trying to access my site.

Sounds like an ISP problem. Are you using a proprietary brand FTP program which remembers your FTP address?
You can try deleting the entry and putting it in again

Rod, I've already built my website with the site builder and plan to switch to hosting to create a home page with a template and add other pages. But I want to keep the pages already made. I know I have to create an index page (my home page?) then sub-folders for each further pages before FTP. What is the first task I have to do? And shall I be able to call each page otherwise than page2, page3, page4...? thanks.

Gisele,
I really like your webpage but you should consider changing the title "yourbusiness.ws" on the top of your page as it leads to another affiliates page if entered into one's browser. This is assuming that it is not another domain which you have.
Wishing you and all GDIers the Best of Success!

Make sure your password is typed in accurately. It is case SeSITivE. Apart from that the only thing I can think of is eiter a username error or an FTP host error. Your username is also case SeSITivE.

David I completely agree with you, and am looking forward to checking out your site.  My question at this time is when you were having problems accessing ftp in the beginning did an error message like this come up??

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Apache/2.2.0 (Unix) PHP/4.4.2 mod_vhs/1.0.30 Server at adriennemaitland.ws Port 80

So Help from everyone please... if this is a typical error i'll be patient and wait the 2 days, however when i tried logging into the ftp.hosting.ws pages like it instructs in the email using my username and login as instructed it says not valid either so i can't even see if my directory file came up.  btw way i use dreamweaver for design and their built in ftp... anyone think that could be part of the problem??

thanks for the help... and i'm excited about this... i just started my 7-day trial tonight, and i'm loving the amount of support and information i'm seeing out here

When you visit your website and notice this:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Apache/2.2.0 (Unix) PHP/4.4.2 mod_vhs/1.0.30 Server at adriennemaitland.ws Port 80

That is not an error.  It means once you upload your files, your site will be published/live.  You MUST make sure that your home page ends in  index.html or it will not work.  I am not certain about the built in ftp of Dreamweaver oo Frontpage.  In my personal opinion, they do not work seamlessly.  I've had issues trying to upload via the built in FTP in the past with other domains outside of the .ws family.  I suggest that you utilze a FTP program to upload your file to the server.  I've had no issues at all uploading files to the .ws server using my FTP program.

great all thanks for your help...

frank m i did find a different ftp program to go through as opposed to using dreamweaver.  however i'm still running into the same issue when trying to access it.  i'm now getting login errors invalid username or pass... and i swear to all i've tried inputing this info in about a dozen times now triple checking my entry against the info that .ws sent me...

david i know reading some of your past posts re: ftp (and their consecutive replies)... is it possible that i just need to wait it out two days   I read someone who told you that:

"It sometimes takes 24-48 for the DNS to propagate."

Now i'm totally cool with being patient.... but can someone just explain that phrase to me  ;) ha ha

my concern is just that if it is a password/username issue, as i can't access with the ftp client or typing in the address in my browser, waiting 2 more days is just that 2 more days, and as i'm going to be promoting the site and buisness in a slightly different way, i need to have my personal site/files up.  and like so many of us newbies out on here, we understand the need for patience, but also don't want the excitement/momentum to fade :)  btw i've already contacted support in regards to the user/pass thing.  how long does it typically take for response from support??

thanks everyone for all the help!

awesome!

thanks, the link you sent me helped me figure that i do have a working username/pass (whoo-hoo!) and that i've properly uploaded my index.html file to my domain directory so the file is there and i'll finish uploading the rest of the files for the site...

however going to my actual site brings up the same

Forbidden
you don't have permission to access etc...

exact same error as before, i'm going to wait for 2 days and see if anything changes.  but at least i know that the file(s) are where they need to be.

if anyone has any other ideas as to why the access permission to my site is denied go ahead and throw them out there for me.  Thanks!

Here's what I see when I go to your page:

Lalala Lalala :)

sometimes your browser will cache the page instead of getting it from the server.  To be sure you're getting what is currently on the server, hold the Control key and hit the F5 key.  That will refresh the page without using what you have cached.  If that still isn't right, double check the ftp info and path info within Frontpage.  I can't remember how to do it off the top of my head, but you should be able to see the "remote site" info to compare with what you have on your local computer.

Does that help?  Let me know if you need further explanation.  Also - if you're still having problems, let me know of any error messages you get.

my concern is just that if it is a password/username issue, as i can't access with the ftp client or typing in the address in my browser, waiting 2 more days is just that 2 more days, and as i'm going to be promoting the site and buisness in a slightly different way, i need to have my personal site/files up.  and like so many of us newbies out on here, we understand the need for patience, but also don't want the excitement/momentum to fade :)  btw i've already contacted support in regards to the user/pass thing.  how long does it typically take for response from support??

Does any one know how to use FTP with ourwebsites so that we can hide affiliate links with a more professional look.

If anyone can help me with this I will be very happy.i downloaded coffee cup 3.0 if it helps.

Dave Hayes

The ways you can hide a link are to cloak it, use a redirect, or sign up for a redirect service such as tinyurl.com
FTP will not help you unless you plan to write your own redirects.

I had the same problem, now I got it all figured out.

First, when you log on through FTP, make sure your website folder is open.  Thats the one thats on GDI web server.  If you open that file you may see other files or folders that you uploaded by mistake, which is why you can't see your website.  It's in a folder inside another folder.

You need to just put your html files directly into your web folder.  Your web folder is the same name as whatever you named your web site.  After that, everthing should be Jim Dandy!

Hi
1)You cannot upload a zip file to .ws. Having said that you can but it would be of no use. You would have to upload the unzipped files.
Choos the hosted option and use an FTP program to do this.

2)It is possible to do this you would have to ask support for help

Pam

What do you see where the picture should be?
Make sure the path to the pictures is correct -  for example if you stored them in a directory called images
the path to the file is images/somepicture.gif

Make sure the path to the image is correct.
One easy way is to type the URL of the image and see if it appears
eg. http://www.somesitesomewhere.ws/images/mypicture.gif should load just the image.
If it does not the image is not there or the URL is wrong

Hi Paolo,

You don't have to create public.html, just index.html.
Make  sure you create your index.html inside  the folder named yourdomain.ws
Yourdomain.ws is the domain name that you registered with GDI.
The index.html should be the webpage that you want to display when you load your site http://www.yourdomain.ws

I have a question.  If I want to upload a digital file like an ebook or video clip to be downloaded from a link on my home page, do I create a separate folder that is named ebooks for instance, upload the pdf file to that folder and then put a link on the home page that would look something liike  www.mywebsitename/ebooks/name of ebook?  Is that how that would be done or is there another way or a better way to put a download link on a page.

You got it right.  That is exactly how you do it.  The key it to upload the file and make sure that you use the correct extension for the video or ebook.  It will not load without the extension

Hi Tom,

This sounds like a path problem. Either the name is incorrectly typed or the path is wrong. Frontpage from memory is not case sensitive whereas GDI is on a unix server which is case sensitive. WRT the path try putting in the full URL and see if that works. If this is the problem make sure you have your directories set up properly.

Title: Loading HTML Files.....

Heya,
I am hoping someone can help me.   I want to load html files on my website and understand that I need to switch my account to basic hosting however I did that once and didn't know where to go from there.   I got so frustrated that I just switched it back.   From reading similar questions, I need to get ftp software??   I am very new at this and not quite sure how I go about doing that.    When I made the pre-emptive switch, I got an email saying my basic hosting was active and got some instructions that seemed complete gibberish to me.    I apologize for my ignorance but really hope I can get some help learning how to load html files to my website and learning the raw basics (ie:  step one - turn your computer on...hahahah)  of getting this figured out.   I really love the site builder software but hope I can take my website even further by loading html files.
Any and all help is very appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi John, I moved this post over to the FTP thread. You need some FTP software like Cute FTP or WS FTP to transfer your files to the server. If you are using Microsoft Front Page to build HTML pages, it has built in FTP capabilities.

I have downloaded Smart FTP and loaded the log in information but my activation email states that my homepage needs to be named 'Index.html'.
Could you please provide any instruction for that?   At the moment, I'm still getting the following error when I try to see my site live "Forbidden - You do not have permission to access / on this server".   I'm guessing the index.html for my home page has something to do with this error?
I appreciate any instructional help about this.
Thanks,
John
ps.  Thanks for moving this over to the appropriate place!

I also forgot to mention that I am using Smart FTP however I am unclear on how I upload an index.html file to my homepage or change my homepage to index.html....
Is there some instruction any one can provide on how to do that?   I think I am missing some basic step to get my website back up by doing this.    Just a thought, should I have changed my home page to index.html before I switched it to basic hosting?   If so, any instruction on how I do that??
Seriously confused and frustrated -
Thanks,

I make use of Frontpage and WS FTP in building my site. Here are some basic things you need to do:

1. Your homepage SHOULD be saved as "index.html" this is a requirement as emailed by GDI when you change your subscription from "Build mY Site" to "Web Hosting" Simply saved your homepage ex "johnhomepage.html" into "index.html" use the menu (in Frontpage) File -- Save As.

2. Upload ALL your files to the "ftp.hosting.ws" server. I mean ALL your files that is connected with your "index.html" (all photos, .jpegs,.gif that you used. And simply change the path to "\.filename".  For example (in Frontpage) your homepage has a picture named mypix.jpeg located in your PC with path "C:mypage\mypix.jpeg". Simply change the pathy to "\mypix.jpeg" once you transferred it to the GDI server.

Hope this helps.

As for an FTP application, I highly recommend Unlimited FTP Online. I've used it exclusively for about 3 or 4 years. You use it online, not on your computer. I like the fact that I can open a file that resides on my website, and make quick edits with Notepad or Wordpad, then ftp the update. I can do this on any computer with an internet computer... even at the library, if need be. Their interface is very easy to use. If you are like me and have lots of websites to manage, you can save all of their settings in your account. Then all you have to do is click on the website you want to access and it takes you right there.

This is their entry point, where you can sign up for a free account. http://www.unlimitedftp.ca/myftp/

It seems to me everyone here is having a hard time with FTP software.

Did you know that if you are using Windows XP, you do NOT need any FTP software at all??

I don't use FTP software. I simply use XP and I use it as if it was another directory. I simply click and drag my files from the folder on my computer to the folder on the server.

Works wonderfully easy. No need to learn another software program. It's built-in and Free.

Windows XP is all you need, and GDI, of course.

ftp.hosting.ws
username: your gdi username
password: your gdi password

If you use the Firefox browser there's a free extension called "Fire FTP".  If you use that you'll be able to ftp into your website.

Hi there.
Can anyone help me out here???
I have been trying to get an ftp set up....I have tried smart ftp, filezilla, ace ftp and lastly ws ftp.
I can't get to log into any of them.
I am using my gdi user name and password and address is ftp.hosting.ws
the error I get with ws ftp is:

Connection Error
This could be caused by any of the following reasons:
Your network connection is down.
The host address is incorrect.
The server you are attempting to connect with is not available.

Anyone got a solution.
Many thanks.
Steve.

Hello, I've built a personal web site that I want to host with GDI, but while I can find the links and set up for the online site builder I can't find any to links, set up, or instructions to ftp my site.  So how do I bypass the site builder and use ftp with GDI???

Thanks,

David

Title: ftp username password
Post by: Rob_B on April 14, 2009, 06:47:47 AM
Hi, I wanted to find out if it is possible to change the hosting username and password so that I can allow someone else to edit that site?  I have three other domains and do not want to allow them to access the ftp hosting with those, just the one.

Just to make sure you know what I mean--

 Address or Host: ftp.hosting.ws
User: username -want to change for one domain name and keep other three
Password: password -to change for one domain name and keep other three
      Port: 21

Then I have access to ftp 3 sites and 1 I can allow uploads from someone helping me edit that particular domain.

Thanks
Rob

I got  my domain name through GDI and am using GDI for hosting and I wish to build my website based on templates provided for me through another source. How do I get the website I end up building to be the domain name and website that all will see when going to my website on the internet?
Thank you for the assistance.

Title: Re: How do I ftp with GDI? - SETTINGS
Post by: RickUpshaw on July 28, 2009, 03:03:20 AM
I have read through every single post here regarding FTP, but there are a couple of settings I can't find anywhere in this forum, nor can I find them on GDI's site.

The settings I can find are:

Host Name:  ftp.hosting.ws
User Name:         GDI User Name
User Password:    GDI Password

The settings I can't find are the port number, publishing mode (options are FTP, VPS, or XCOPY - I assume this would be FTP), and the working directory.  I tried FTP, Port 21, and public_html, but it didn't work.  Any ideas?  Anyone?

 ???

Hello,

Do you offer hosting services?
Yes, we do offer deluxe, self service hosting.

How do I purchase hosting?
There is no additional charge for hosting. It is included in your $10 monthly fee for the respective domain.

However, how am I going to access to that hosting? Lookup for the stats (Bandwidth usage etc.).
And even I can't access it via FTP program:

ftp.yourdomainname.ws
Username
Password
Port?
Path?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
When you upload files you have to make sure that your home page(the page you want to appear first) should be named either
index.html
index.htm
index.php
Then when you type your domain in an internet explorer you will see the website you uploaded

To change your GDI account(domain) into basic hosting:-
Log-in to your account-click "domain"-click "change DNS"-click "basic hosting"-click "continue".....Then GDI will send you an email about your activated hosting.

To upload files in the activated hosting:-
Open an ftp software(filezilla works well....download it free if you don't have it)-connect to GDI server by filling the necessary info:-
host=ftp.hosting.ws     username=yourGDIusername   password=yourGDIpassword   port=21
Lt side of the software you will see files from your hard drive
Rt side of the software you will see your GDI domain directories
Right click at files you want to upload in your hard drive-select upload.....you will see files being uploaded.
*Make sure your home page is named one of the three below
index.html
index.htm
index.php

Cheers!

Hi,
Loggin to your GDI account and go to domains, you will see your domain listed.   Click on change DNS setting and choose from the list.    Your choices pertain to how you built your site, if you used an outside source to build your site pick basic hosting if you used GDI pick site builder.

I hope this helps!

Can someone please help.  I just don't get it.  I've read this thread, the gdi help files, my FileZilla ftp help files. My email from GDI, etc.
I keep seeing this instruction below, but... I just for the life of me cannot figure out "where" I am to go to do this.

Make sure your home page is named one of the three below
index.html
index.htm
index.php

I can't find where I am to go, or anything, anywhere that says to name my Home Page here.  Could somebody please, please tell me step by step, and click by click exactly where I go, and what I click on, to get to the exact place I'm supposed to be, in order to name my home page?

For instance, I don't know if I'm supposed to be in FileZilla, or GDI to start with, and then where to go from there....  ???  :'(

Hello there

Ok, firstly....I need to know what web development program are you using (Dreamweaver, Microsoft Frontpage, Notepad, Other text editors)?

^^Before I can give you a quick and easy guide^^

I'm guessing FileZilla is the program your trying to FTP your content with, correct me if I'm wrong.

For the homepage problem:

MUST DO's:

1.) Make sure your homepage is at the root of your site (Not in any folders)
2.) Make sure your homepage is named index.(file format here). NO capital letters! (examples: index.html, index.php, index.htm, index.asp)

Also, what file format is your site in? (HTML, PHP, ASP etc etc)?

Hi, I am using Coffecup Free FTP to upload my files. But I recently have a "disk quota exceeded" problem.  When I checked the sizes of my files, its very small as compared to my allowed disk space of 100MB. Can someone help me with this?

Thanks.

Hello,

Did you check the size of your files on the server, or on your local machine (your computer)?

Your local files (the files on your computer) may be different to the ones on the server.

Sometimes, most FTP programs don't delete files on the server, when un-present on the the local machine. So if you deleted any files on your computer, chances are, they've not been deleted on the server, which is why your hosting account has exceeded it's allowed disk quota.

You FTP program should allow you to view files on the server. Go through files on there, check their sizes.
