Title: Website Advice Corner!
Post by: Susie Blackman on July 28, 2005, 03:38:33 PM
I was asked the other day why do I need a website - I said to promote your business, umm keep in contact with family umm I fumbled  and thought, I really don't know why. They understood I was new to this and I said I would definately find out why. Please help with suggestions thanks Susie.

I think the main answer to this, is that in this day and age a website is a must.

Since the website obtained from GDI is a personal one, and can be used for anything, this should be taken as a huge opportunity for any project the prospect may have had in mind.

Business (Gdi and/or any other)
Family (staying in contact as a lot of families are dispersed. A chance to show latest photos and more to share with family)
Personal (any other personal motivation)

I guess its all in the way you put it across that really matters.

Hope this helps

Hi Susie,

The possibilities are endless! A Website can be used for anything!

They could use it to promote many affiliate programs and have multiple streams of income coming in or they can use it for something personal. No matter what it's being used for, they can always make money with it.

Hello Susie!

Just as everyone has stated...the possibilities are endless!  I just finished visiting another Member's site and hope she does not mind me sharing this.  She addressed the same topic on her site:  http://awebsite.ws

Feel free to contact her if needed!

I wrote this in 1999  8)

Reasons to have a website
GOOD REASONS
You want to sell something.
You want an online brochure.
You want to provide backup for your customers.
You want to provide information to some interested party

BAD REASONS
It’s the 20th Century and everyone else has one.
My son/daughter says we should have one.
The IT department or marketing says we need a website – but they cannot tell you why.

Here are a few ideas that are missing:

An online resume for prospective employers.

A place to share a favorite hobby or special interest with others

An online listing of your OWN favorite web sites so you have bookmarks
of your favorite sites whereever you may log-on to the Internet.

A place to create a family newsletter.

A place to post a family calendar so anyone in your family can log-in
and see who is doing what when and add their own schedule.

A place to post your artwork or writing.

A place to refer your friends and family to your own movie reviews,
restaurant reviews, gift ideas.

If you have an online business that requires downline building,
you can take the lead and create a web site to support your growing team.

A place to host a virtual garage sale!

The uses for a web site are endless and limited only by your own imagination.

8) I have no idea if I am preaching to the converted but I have seen quite a few black background sites from GDI members. They are normally dramatic and use white and red text. There are several problems with this.

1)White on black will not print as the text is white.
2)Red and black are the same color for color blind people. So your site is useless to at least 10% of your viewers.

You should consider an offwhite color and yellow as texts on black backgrounds.
Always put critical links in yellow or offwhite so that they can be seen and people can print out the page to call you later.

Hello, does anybody know of a way to change the background black via html on the templates that have white backgrounds? I tried creating a body tag but it was a no go. Maybe it just isn't possible with the site builder? Thanks

Title: Re: Black backgrounds
Post by: RodB on August 08, 2005, 12:12:25 AM
?? There must be someway to alter the background and a body tag is only one way.
Another way is to use a style in the code.
<span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 0);">All your text</span> or <span style="background-color: #FFFF00;">All your text</span> should work fine

A third way is to modify gdi's cascading style sheet. GDI's code guys love using the "span" tag. From memory their main .css file is called style1.css. Seeing as I am not allowed to post URLS look for an article called CSS Made Easy by Kevin Yank if you want to learn more. Also WDG has a list of all the industry standard CSS properties.

A final way is to insert a background color using the <bgcolor="red" or "blue" or "green"> tag or a background image or a tile image into a big table which will overide the body tag.

Rod, you made a good point as always. I have one black page, but it has to be a bit dramatic though I have the red letters on it, too! Not only that they're the same for color blind people, they are print unvisible in black/white technique, too.

Well, Deborah, I'm a bit late here but maybe I can still help.

Try to edit your text by changing the content from text into html. There you have all the designer options as you would do it with Word. Click the design button below (frist from the left under the form) and edit your text by marking it all or as much as you wont to be different colour, press the font color button and choose the color. That way you also can choose the size of the text, layout, appearence and interface. You can also choose the type of fonts you want to use - all in all the possibility are almost the same as you would do it in Word! I suggest you do a hidden test page (acording to what I've seen on your webpage, you still have a lot of space) and play a bit with all this, test all the possibilities and only after that use all this on your shown webpages.

Well I hope it helps!

Tatjana

Title: Best text size?
Post by: Julie Wallis on September 10, 2005, 11:17:16 AM
I've been playing around with the new site builder and can't decide which size text is the better one to use.
Most of my site is in the smaller text but I was thinking about using a larger one to make it easier to read.

www.harleytours.ws (http://www.harleytours.ws)

The page I have been testing the larger text on is the Xmas paty Plans
but wonder if it is tool large.

I would love some opinions on which is the better size to use.

Small font size is definately better.  If a page uses too large a font, the words just jump out of the page and it is very difficult to read.  With large resolution screens, it is much clearer with smaller text.

Great site, makes me want to by a bike and drive across Australia.  But maybe I'll try making some GDI money first!

Simon.

The words on the Harley site look fine. The font size should be determined by the target market FWIW

Hi,

A really common question, but it keeps getting lost way down there in the forum.  I remember asking myself as there is just too much here to keep browsing through.

Error 122 means there is too much information in the HTML block.

Just 'Add content' & 'Add HTML' whilst in page view.  This will add a second block where you can continue.

Not knowing your talent  ;) If you are familiar with Frontpage or any other web builder of your own choice, you can change the options to the third one down 'build with your own web builder' or something like that, and can upload files with FTP

Hope this helps,
Kay

One thing that should be mentioned, if you are trying to build a business from GDI it helps to use the Website Builder because it included a larger universe of potential prospects. If they see and recognize that this is something they can do themselves, it stands to reason it would produce more signups.

Just a thought

Title: The importance of text
Post by: RodB on December 04, 2005, 03:10:37 AM
FWIW I have recently looked at about 30 sites from GDIers who are starting out and one consistent weakness sticks out. The sites all have lots of graphics and or sexy java scripts or both. No problem with this - however you need text to build good sites. This means you have to write words and tell the surfers about yourself and what you want them to do and what your dream is and how they are going to make millions.

For example consider the cigarette industry. Write about cigarettes, why tobbacco is bad for you, ashtrays, cigarette lighters, the history of tobbacco, snuff, chewing tobbacco, cigarette holders, nictotine, cigars, pipes, humidors and anything else you can think about to lay a solid TEXT foundation about your chosen subject.

This reinforces the quality of your site and makes it stand out from all the other guys who just have pictures. Pictures are easy to put on a site and make a difference but google and yahoo and MSN IGNORE pictures.

Surfers and spiders love text.(http://www.gdi-made-easy.ws/images/smilies/eating.gif)

Spell it out - remember you maybe familiar with your product but the average surfer is out cruising and has no idea at all.

Another aspect of web design I have implemented recently is the importance of the opening page. The first look at you site should give the viewer an idea of the main concept of your entire site, then allow the rest of the site to flesh out those concepts.

I agree Brad,

The first thing that surfers lookk at is the front page of your site, so then it should look like a
million bucks or something like that. This way they will get hooked and decide  that your site is
worth the curiousity.

Unlike me I just tell everyone that if they join GDI they have the possibility of creating their own
magnificent Website because I haven't had the time to create my own. For this reason I say that
not all people are gifted in creating their own sites like me.

But I do encourage this benefit of GDI because I believe that it is anb important factor to our \
business as Chip said. :D

Rod,

You hit the nail squarely on the head.  Content is King when it comes to the search engines.

Write as much as you can (within reason) and be sure to include the keyword phrases by which you want people to find you when they do searches on Yahoo!, MSN, and Google.  e.g., "Great MLM Opportunity" or "Home-Based Internet Business" - or whatever your website is geared towards.

In addition, Be Patient.  It takes a while for the search engines to fully index your site; however, if you keep your content fresh, the search engine spiders and robots will keep coming back once they do find you.

--Clark...

Post by: Matthew Green on January 18, 2006, 01:53:56 PM
YES, YES, YES,

CONTENT counts for a great deal.
When the Google-Bots etc index your Web Page (that is if your HTML is ROBOT FRIENDLY) they check your CONTENT against your KEYWORDS in the Meta Tags.
The more prominent the KEYWORDS (frequency of use, <h1><b><u> ets are also considered) the BETTER.  (HIGHER Page Rank ?/10 (PR?/10))

As RodB said in the TOPIC STARTER POST

FWIW I have recently looked at about 30 sites from GDIers who are starting out and one consistent weakness sticks out. The sites all have lots of graphics and or sexy java scripts or both. No problem with this - however you need text to build good sites. This means you have to write words and tell the surfers about yourself and what you want them to do and what your dream is and how they are going to make millions.
CONTENT Adds value to your Web Page.
Value can also be added to the Images, Objects etc on your Web Page. (That is Page Rank ?/10 (PR?/10))

You can name your images their location url's to match your KEEYWORDS and/or variations.
example:- rename image001.JPG  call it keyword.jpg (better to use lowercase)

you can also add <alt="here you put some text that will appear if the VIEWER has BLOCKED IMAGES">  (the " " at either end SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED)
again you can add your KEYWORDS and/or variations.

you can also add <title="whatever you want to call the image"> (the " " at either end SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED) When the BROWSER HOVERS over the image with the MOUSE, the TITLE will be revealed.
again you can add your KEYWORDS and/or variations.

example from
<img src="http://www.yourdomain.ws/jfue/s123/image001.JPG" >
<img src="http://www.yourdomain.ws/keyword/keyword-variation/keyword.jpg" >

with <alt=" ">
<img src="http://www.yourdomain.ws/keyword/keyword-variation/keyword.jpg" <alt="here you put some text that will appear if the VIEWER has BLOCKED IMAGES">

with <title=" ">
<img title="whatever you want to call the image" src="http://www.yourdomain.ws/keyword/keyword-variation/keyword.jpg"  alt="here you put some text that will appear if the VIEWER has BLOCKED IMAGES">

The same is can be used for a HYPERLINK

<a href="http://your-target" </a>
there are differences though. HYPERLINKS only use the <alt=" "> if there is an image associated with it.
a HYPERLINK should ALWAYS be ended with </a>

<a title="whatever you want to call the image" href="http://your-target" ><img  src="http://www.yourdomain.ws/keyword/keyword-variation/keyword.jpg"  alt="here you put some text that will appear if the VIEWER has BLOCKED IMAGES" ></a>

There are many factors involved when seeking a HIGHER Page Rank ?/10 (PR?/10).
Outside influence also affects your PR. The more links to your Web Page, that are from Websites featuring SIMILAR KEYWORDS the BETTER.

The Google-Bots etc can easily be OFFENDED TOO. Pages can be rejected or given a LOW PR for CHEATING
adding REPEAT KEYWORDS, Hidden TEXT (same coluor as background, or obscured with images etc) is FROWNED UPON.
STOP WORDS and SYMBOLS .*/#~:{} can turn the Google-Bot etc away if featured in your <title> </title>

FACT - GET THIS SECTION (<head> </head>) WRONG AND YOUR PAGE (<body> </body>) IS WORTHLESS
<head>
<title> </title>
<META TAGS> I could go on forever here but I have to stop somewhere, besides I don't know for sure I have presented this INFO to well.
</head>

I have much, much more of the SAME, SIMILAR so if this information has been useful to you any you would like further assistance please just ASK,

Who said beauty was Skin Deep?

GDI has the best promotional materials I have ever seen...."BUT" ( here comes the but ) the materials are severly lacking as related to this topic.."Why do I need a website?" Maybe I am missing something here but if I wanted to target GDI to prospects that want or need web hosting the first thing they would see using the GDI promotional materials is the opportunity vs. the fantastic benefits of .WS hosting. Anyone willing to share ideas or comments?

This is only a suggestion but we are trying to build a name as well as the many other things we do here, we are not just another web site we are the WebSite and we want everyone to equate .ws with WebSite as much as possible it takes an extra second to type it in but this will reward the whole GDI .ws family. I also try to use the word a little extra just to make sure people who see it are pre-thinking WebSite

I would like to hear what others think about this or other word use suggestions.

Font size is an issue and should be based on your target market. I have reviewed hundreds of travel websites aimed at the high end luxury market with small text. The people who can afford high end luxury travel cannot read small text. So they go elsewhere. Readability is critical. Small text is a typical young designer giveaway. Size your text for your target market.

Hello all..My name is Scott.  I recently signed on and completed the website and added links to my yahoo messenger profile.  I have a extremely tight budget and am struggling to get by.  Were fixing to have a baby at the end of this month so a second income is paramount.  We both work fulltime jobs but I pay childsupport to my ex and its just rough.  Id really like some help with the site builder to set up a nicer page.  I couldnt figure out how to get a different background in...mine is white, and I had problems with moving things to where I wanted them on the screen.  If anyone out there has the time to lend a helping hand it would be much appreciated.  Also, one of the things I've been asked is, is there a long term contract?  I honestly dont think there is but have nothing concrete yet as an answer.

Hi Scott,

This can be done on the cheap. The thing to do is work at it until it comes right. The bacground color is in the <body> tag in an HTML document. No there is no fixed contract at GDI

Welcome to GDI  I hope everything goes well with you &  your new family.
I am not exactly sure as to why you want to change a background. You choose a suitable template and gather together the graphics you need .You can  also use  banner ads. . .

. It is a good idea to look at the templates decide the layout  you want then go to the drawing board and first prepare the layout and text and graphics you want to use .Then follow the instructions carefully and put it together..the only changes I have been able to make using webbuilder is just change to another template.:(.
You didn't post what you had done on your website so far , please do.  No contract except the monthly payment of $10.the rest is up to you. ;)

??? I would like someone to have a look at my WS. website and please give me some CONSTRUCTIVE  input

http://www.patsite.ws I have been using it for a while now and the only people who come  as far as I can see are people promoting  themseves  on my guest book?  :( >:(
like sand through the hour glass you're telling me!

This is a modification :Why is it that only sometimes when I click the  url there to my website in WS. does it come up?

Hello Pat,

I looked at your site and off the top of my head it is seriously short of content. You probably need to add more about GDI on new pages. Also you should consider getting rid of the music as it slows your site down + you have to click the scary activeX thingy. At the bottom of your
front page there is a big open space?

Secondly I have no idea what you are doing to promote it.

One of the things you can do successfully is use the traffic exchanges.
I posted the links in .ws show forum if you go look. Chip asked for the links
to be posted in the thread about the Oct 22nd show I did at his request.

If you are still in trouble pm me.

Rod

I've been playing around with the new site builder and can't decide which size text is the better one to use.
Most of my site is in the smaller text but I was thinking about using a larger one to make it easier to read.

www.harleytours.ws (http://www.harleytours.ws)

The page I have been testing the larger text on is the Xmas paty Plans
but wonder if it is tool large.

I would love some opinions on which is the better size to use.

Julie

Hi there, Julie. Your body text is probably too small especially for those with poor eyesight. Try using the font face Verdana for body text in 10 point size. That's standard for those who know typography. You're looking at the font here. Try to avoid using font size in 8 point. For headings, you can go from 12 point to 24 point size.

I've reviewed several sites here...

My advice would to be careful about the content and limit exchanges, free links and such. I think it takes away from your site when this is done. Many sites look so busy it's confusing to the viewer. If anything - use nice looking banners on a dedicated banner page or links page, but not your home page.

To your success,

Alan

Hi Elena,

It's always good to build the webpage on your own, since GDI offers the site builder tool for those who don't know about coding.
Another benefit in building your own page is when you have downlines, you can teach them to do the same.
In the networking business, duplication is key.

If you need help in building the website, you can refer to the following sites:

You can also refer to my video tutorial which I have posted in youtube

Title: Non-GDI Websites
Post by: MRosborough on April 13, 2007, 04:00:10 AM
Does anyone have examples of 'Professional looking' non-Gdi promoting websites for an off/online businesses, that were used solely using Sitebuilder-no html.  (OK that was a mouthful  :-\

The reason I ask is that I have had a few people asking to show examples of what the sitebuilder can do for the complete amateur.  I have looked several times at the 'Showcase your website' thread but unfortunately don't have time to go through the complete 144 pages of it.

The ws.moms is spectacular - was that built solely with Sitebuilder?  And credit to the harleytours also.  Was w3schools built with Sitebuilder?

Obviously I don't want to see if you have set up personal family sites, but maybe something for an offline business, coffee shop, pizza parlour etc.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Shell,

You can take a look at mine. I'm not sure if you would considered it 'professional looking', but I did it with solely the site builder.
The first page is about myself - well I am promoting GDI with it, but I used the subpages to write about other stuff that I'm involved in.

Looking for a Non-Gdi promoting website to recommend as an example.

I would love to see active, professional 'customer websites' (without infringing on anyones personal site  :-*)

Regarding permission from the Owners of these sites,  I am looking to 'quote/sample' them as examples of what can be achieved through the GDI sitebuilder in the Layman's market.

Kind Regards,

Shell

hello all,

My website re-directs browsers to (freedom.ws/)

This worked great for me becasue browsers can view my movie right then and there. I have been a member for only 1 month and I have 5 sign ups, 2 quit.

I have another website which I just did to help capture emails and phone numbers. I want to see if this will ultimatley boost my sales.

1.  Can I upload or import pictures /  images from pc
2.  Lets say I take 3 to 4 days to complete the task. Can I save the unfinish job to be continued the following day.

I can help.

I don't know what the site builder is like but I recommend getting a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) program like Netscape Composer which comes with the Netscape browser and is free. You will know what your page is going to look like as you are designing it. Play around with it and you will learn how to use it.

If you decide to use Netscape Composer and need help, just reply to this post.

My problem is I have no idea where I have to put "index.html". It states:

This is the main directory for your rahmiwray.ws site.
All your site's files must be uploaded here. Please note, your
home page MUST be named:

     index.html

If you do not have a valid index.html file in your main directory,
you will receive an error message when trying to visit your
WebSite.

The next question I have is when i view my page from a different browser, I get different pages..All mine but previous ones'. Is that because of the "index" thing....
Also, which http: is for me?

I've used http://rahmiwray.ws
and
http://www.rahmiwray.ws

both show different pages....Please can someone advise me on what's wrong and how to fix it so only one page shows up..

P.s. Sorry members for adding a new one but I spent days trying to find a right page to add it and once I could not find the post I have posted before...
It's really confusing and frustrating sometimes here for me...

Thank you all and have a happy holiday.

Hi All,

I have started a second domain to try to start my own business in the uk. I have put together (using my basic knowledge) a website carportsuk.ws and although i am getting regular visitors to my site, very very few actually contact me. I know that the site is very basic and could do with a professional touch, but that is beyond my budget at the moment.

Would anybody be so kind and take a look at my site and possibly suggest ways in which i may improve responses.

Many thanks
                    K

Ps, Great forum, great people, Have found loads of answers on these pages.  Thanks.

Hi Joan,

I am not sure where you are inserting this info. You will find that when you put
info on any page if you don't hit the save button, or the submit button what you
have will not be saved. If things are changing on you check your codes on the site
builder.

Hi Susie,

The uses of our WS Website/s are limited only by our imagination.

What are your hobbies, and or general interest? Do you write stories, poetry etc...
Do you have an interest in Art or photography. I could go on and on with a huge
list of things to do with a Website, but I am sure by now you are getting an idea
of where I am heading with this.

Blogs are a very popular item these days, and you can create a blog on your Website

I read a fantastic article once. It was about using color or not in the background. The statistics were awful when it came to staying on a website for very long if the background was color. The writer is very well respected and said if you use text in an Arial and Times New Roman in black with a white background your chances of gaining new customers was increased tenfold. I use that advice and I made $800 so far this week and it is only Tuesday!

to easily create a website I use Visual Basic Studio. most of all the features work on the server. What I mean by this is, they don't allow you to use databases. However, the mini 'apps' built in Visual Basic still work for me.

what you should do if your a newbie with html is to stay on GDI's online web developer. Once you master that, you can move onto a html program like what I use (Visual Basic). It will take a few weeks to get used to, however it is used to it.

ps: microsoft has enough resources for Visual Basic online it would be easy to master the program.

Very helpful suggestions. Thanks a lot!

Hi Julie,

I'm new to the Forum (Hi Everyone!) and not too far into GDI, so very little to offer. But, I've been reading re: black backgrounds and text size. Someone already talked about the visual impairment re: color blindness, but another thing you might consider is folks with vision loss from Macular Degeneration (LOTS of us over-50's have this problem).

I don't know about others, but a light colored text on a dark, or even brightly colored (red, bright blue) background is near to impossible to read, unless the text is huge. Also causes severe headaches trying to read them. Plus, many younger people tend to make text size way to small (your text size is great!).

Anyway, just my $0.2
Good luck!

You can see my website(s)  and each business inside also has their own website and URL. Any suggestions? I can't promote myself as a money making guru-after all, I need to make some money 1st!!!-but the people at greatestshoppingmall.com liked the name, and couldn't believe the URL name hadn't already been taken. If you would like the best possible website to get your information out,
its important to keep your website clean and straight to the point.

some people can be amazed by the flashiness and colors of the website,
but really in a touch economy people want honesty and straight forward
facts about the bizness or income op.

The best reasons to have a website is to make money from it somehow. Even if its for a non-profit you should still be trying to build a list of prospects from the traffic that goes to the site.
