Title: SEO: SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
Post by: D Ross on July 11, 2005, 09:53:53 AM
Hello Gang!!!

It's me again. I need some answers on META TAGS.

According to the help section on meta tags I should have a hundred key words and a breif
Statement that describes my business. Do I have to use new key words and descriptions on
each page? Since I plan to have six pages, will I be penalized for using the same key words
     and description on each page?

I thank you for any light that you can can shed on this matter ???

No you won't be penalized but I would never suggest using the same words on each page I would try and find something unique for each. Plus also when you set them up make sure not to forget the comma between each one. Hopefully this helps.

You don't have to use META tags for each individual page that you create throughout your website. Most people only use META tags on their first (main) page. However, you can, if you chose, set your site up to have META tags on each of your 6 pages....the choice is really yours. It's just a little extra coding on each page for you.
The keywords you decide to use are up to you.....as long as all 6 of your pages are *related* to each other, there isn't a problem with reusing the same keywords in your META tags.
Just make sure that after you set up your META tags that you start submitting your website to different search engines, so your site will be listed.

Hi all,

This service and biz is great!

I have noticed a prob.   Yahoo, google . . .   when I type in my site name, I get the generic website - not my built site.  ???   I have build my own website forwarding (I double checked) and the page is published.    I have also entered another GDI website in yahoo and notice the same prob.

Thanks

Hi Maria,

It can take 2-10 weeks to get your site listed in the major search engines.

Thanks Nicole!

2-10 weeks  . . .  bummer. Any idea why so long?  Anything that can be done to speed that up?

Thank you!

Hi Maria,

The only way to have your Website shown up in a shorter amount of time is if you use an express inclusion program which you would have to pay for.

The reason it takes 2-10 weeks is because search engines send out "spiders" to crawl your Website. Your site will not be indexed until the bots make their way around the WWW again.

This thread of Posts raises a very significant Topic, to wit, SEO=SearchEngineOptimization.

May I suggest, a Member start a Topic: 'How to Maximize SEO Results' so then we can all reap the benefits.

Actually its technically possible to get your site listed in about 3 days but this is not for the feint hearted. The reason it takes so long is that first your site has to be spidered and then included in the database. If you want instant results go to the pay per click search engines like Yahoo Search Performance and spend some time listing your site in the larger directories.

PS do not try and list your site at DMOZ unless its very high in content and not about GDI it will just be thrown out.

Hi Maria,

Below are some guidelines to follow to get your Website found and indexed.

  • Create a site that has a lot of useful information
  • Include keyword and description meta tags
  • Use the keywords in your meta tags in your content
  • Use keywords in your Title
  • Create a site map with links that point to important parts of your Website
  • Reciprocal Linking/One way links

Remember, search engines love content!

You are correct Maria. It doesn't help to have a website if you are not
listed and getting traffic. That should be the next step in the training
is to show how to get your site listed. Also, it should be in steps that
new people to the Internet will understand.

Hello Maria,

I would suggest surfing the Web and researching how others have created their site map. Then you can visually see how one looks.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Add a text link on the front of your site. This way search engines and visitors can locate it
2. Make sure your site map not only has links, but also good content.
3. Organize your sitemap into categories so that visitors can easily locate what they're looking for.

Hello,

Here is an example of how Meta Tags are used.

<META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<META NAME="Title" CONTENT="Your site's title">
<META NAME="Subject" CONTENT="Your site's subject">
<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Your site's description">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="keyword1, keyword2, keyword3">

<META NAME="Category" content="Your Website's Category">

Kent,

You add the meta tags into your HTML code just like you see in the above picture. I would suggest going around to different Websites and viewing the source code, so you get the idea. You can view the source code by selecting "View" and then Source within your browser.

You can also just do a search on, say Google, for Meta Tags and it can be explained from various different sites!

Is there a place in GDI where one can search as we used to in printed manuals?  I have been a member for over a year and have done nothing -- but would like to get started.  I need an education on web design, graphics available, terms defined (for instance what the heck is a meta tag?)  I'd also like information on ideal sites, etc.  ::)

I am a grandmother (young in heart even if the calendar doesn't recognize it) and self taught on the computer.  I've taught myself the skills I needed in various positions.  Now, I'm retired, and want to add to our retirement income. I'm finding there are lots of holes in my knowledge.  I'd also be open to any printed references others have had success with.

P. S.  I note I am under "Post Moderation" and that my post will appear after approval.  If you're not approved -- are you notified? ???

Hello Kathryn,

Welcome to GDI's global community!

Once you've made at least 50 posts and have followed the rules of the GDI forum, your moderation will be considered for removal.

Meta Tags are used in HTML for providing to the search engines your keywords and description of your Website. Having the correct keywords can improve your listing within the search engines. Just type "meta tags" in Google or any other word that you need defined. The search engines are wonderful for research!

I recommend viewing the topic called "GREAT Resource For Building Your Website!" and reading the Help section in your Sitebuilder.

Hello,

You don't have to paste that code into your site. Free search engine submission companies provide a free service and would just appreciate it if you add their button or link to your site.

Hello,

Meta Tags are similar to the system that you have at your Local Library... The Books are indexed according to their subject, author, language, etc etc

Meta Tags are the Internet equivelant...

Keywords have been mentioned lots in this topic;
I want to add a little about Keywords and adding Weight to your Keywords...
SE's use complex formulas to work out the value of each Keyword in your Meta's
The number of times present, the number of variations (importatant), how often repeats (repeat phrases etc are BAD) Bold Text, H1, 2,3 4 5 Tags (header) as well as colours and alt tabs... there is more to it than this, but to Add a Keyword to your metaTag you need to make sure it plays an importany role to your webpage.

I know that I am Rambling here but actually this is a HUGE SUBJECT that would take days to go into... I just want to give you a bit to be going on with...
There are Porgrammes available that will actually assess your Webpage to see how it ranks, they will also suggest how you need to change things for a better Ranking...   I use a Programme called Web CEO... I can use it to do many neat tricks that would take me forever to work out manually...

Your Keywords should be present in your Url, your Title, the start and end of your page and lots of variations in between.
Your Keywords Should also be present in the Headers of your Page (H1 H2 etc)
Keywords and Meta Tags should not use any special case or will be rejected (*/+='@;:/?><.,!"£$%^&*() etc)

You wnt a high rating to get closer to the Top odf SEARCH RESULTS...
If you have too much erelevant content on your Page (too many words, phrases that do not relate to the Keywords) or worse still, not enough content on your Webpage it will rank very low...

Links from other Websites are also added to the equasion when working out your RANKING...

The more links you have pointing towards your Webpage the better your Ranking will be.... If only it was that simple... If the links to your Website are placed with the wrong Keywords or there is a lot of other links and content, this will actually reduce your RANKING so things like Pixel Ads can seriously harm your PR...

Also if you try to have hidden text etc to booster your PR, they will know about it and penalise you for it. (example the text and background is the same colour or an image obscures the text)

You can also be rejected if you spam the Search Engines... There are many submitters available but most of them will do you more harm than good because they just send out the info regardless of submission rules etc so the Search Engines will block you, easier than asking you to please stop submitting the same page over and over...

I will leave it at this for now because I know that your head is probably hurting already, just ask questions and the answers will be given...

Hello Andy,

The reason why you're unable to find your Website listed in Google is because there are millions of Websites competing for the same exact keyword phrases as you. These sites simply rank higher than yours because they keep up with Search Engine Optimization: have more relevant search terms in their content as well as many inbound links pointing to their Website.

Andy,

There are lots of other reasons as well. In particular I note you saying your site is under construction. It takes a good few weeks to get into google so you need to finish your site so google has a finished site to assess.

I am actaully an seo guy for many years I am seeing ALOT of bad info on this subject. For one don't ever pay for inclusion and it takes 3 days to get into google if you do it right. As far as meta tags don't use 100 keywords lol that does nothing. What you HAVE to do is build a page around a keyword without it sounding spammy at all. And for all of you new or misinformed with seo it doesn't really matter what you have in your meta tags or even on your page for that matter. The true key to seo is offsite optimization. As in if you want to target lets say global domains international alot of people for some crazy reason try and spam gdi within their pages and their meta tags. This does nothing BUT if you get alot of high page rank web pages linking to your page with the link text of global domains international that will earn you credit and improve your ranking.

Don't ever pay for seo ever and if you have questions just ask. SEO is very easy once you understand the REAL rules to it. Also keyword tags are only used by 10% or less of search engines so it is almost pointless to even put it in there. The only search engine worth optimizating for google and they have a year long sandbox on all new sites. Which makes it very hard to get included but I have a trick to get it done fast. I get my sites listed in about 1-2 days. Also I am mainly on the 1-3 position of whatever keywords i am optimizing for.

All of you who are reading this thread please dont listen to everything on here as most is incorrect and will actually affect your optimization in a bad way.

Hello Don,

So.. what is your trick? How exactly are you getting listed under MAJOR keywords that compete with millions of other Websites in as little as 1-3 days? Or, are you choosing keywords that are not as popular?

Yes, it is easy to get listed fast in Google. All you have to do is submit an article about the subject of your Website and include your URL at the bottom of the article, and then submit to article directories. Also, if you're able to get a PR7 Web page to link to you then your site will more than likely be listed in 24 hours.

You're correct about offline optimization being the "true key" but it is also a good idea to onpage optimize as well.

Nicole

This is something that I have been doing for awhile and have gotten the hang of it I suppose. A pr7 of course will get you there but getting a link that is related to your subject and on a pr7 is pretty non existant to say the least. There are many methods that I do use but I was just trying to let people know not to focu so much on what they cram in their page. Write your website so it reads very well and gets all the points across that you are wanting to get across. Do not write a great page then figure ways to cram home based business, and gdi into it. It always works best to write for humans as the robots these days are getting better at seeing if you are keyword cramming. I wrote a tutorial on seo awhile back and I will see if I have it and post it up somewhere or at least a link to it. This will help others be able to get the hang of it and market their website better.

One great note though is watch out who has your link on their page. Having bad linking partners is a big downer as far as search engines go. Never exchange links with anyone with a pr0 simply because they are either new or they are on their way to getting grayed out and banned. Keep up on that. There are alot of great tools online that are free to use to help you with this problem which I can email links to people if they would like the information.

Not clear on some of the things Don is speaking about ???

1How do you know who has your link on their page?

2 Are you able to pick who you link to?

3 What is a pr0 link?

4 What free tools on line can help with these problems?

Title: Re: SEO: SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION - Google site registration
Post by: James Jenkins on September 21, 2007, 01:41:25 PM
This is for everyone using SiteBuilder,

I highly recommend that you start a Google account. It allows you access to many of their services like, blogger, adwords, etc. There is also a webmasters section. Much good, but general, information. However, to use many of their webmaster tools you are required to register your website main domain name (i.e. http//yoursite.ws/).

They then provide you an html snipet to add to your site so they can validate you are the owner.

This is a problem for those using the sitebuilder to create a website. But, I have discovered a workaround!

In your additional properties (where the meta tags & discription are added) for your home page, in the meta description block, modify the code google gave you, as follows:

This is your meta description for your site. It is in plain english, or your language of choice."/>
<meta name="verify-v1" content="qIg3D8eXuuVVIl7p2JnLzEw8PQYcGbJ8W1ujPLJv+1g=" /><

Just change the above code with what Google provides you. It's just a slight change to the end of your description and the end of the code.

I don't know if it is my imagination or not, but registering my site seemed to get it indexed in just a few days, AND updates I make to it seem to be spydered in about 24-48 hours. Maybe it would have happened anyway, but can't hurt to let Google know you're there.

I'm still working on a sitemap that Google will recognize as valid. Anyone got suggestions on how to do that? Remember, this is using GDI sitebuilder.

Thanks All,

You can add a simple sitemap using text file.
See the details here:
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=34657

As this requires you to upload a text file, I am afraid you can't do it with the GDI site builder.
If anyone knows how to create sitemap using the GDI sitebuilder, I would love to learn it.

There is no need to upload HTML file if using sitebuilder, just type in the text in the sitebuilder, and once the page is published you will have the html page (.html)
However if it's a text file (extension of file is .txt), don't we need to use ftp to upload it?
If we choose the hosting option, then we will be able to ftp a text file, but the sitebuilder option will be disabled as a result.

just wondering if anyone knows how i can track hits/visits etc to my .ws site. By that i dont mean hits to my affiliate link but the actual website that i've built. I've routed through the options in the members area but cant seem to find anything. Also what kind of bandwidth usage is available?

thanks

I am using the sitebuilder and having so much trouble trying to get my meta tag verified from the Google Webtools. I have tried adding the meta tag description that James suggested and I am still unsuccessful. AHHHHH!!! not sure if I am doing it wrong, putting it in the wrong place or what. Please help :-[

Thanks All,

I'm getting crazy . How I do this . Google gives me the code and then what ? I'm using a template from site builder 4.01

Where I insert the code . I tried in many ways and nothing works. I'm at my first website . Help !

Google gives you the code then you add   "/>  at the beginning of the code and     " /><             after the equal from the end of it. After doing so go to the sitebuilder and click properties from your home page (it's something green like a button) ;   :o GO to Description and paste the modified code from google.  ;) ok! Good luck!
P.S.  :D Sorry for my spelling mistakes. I'm not from USA or UK you know.

Can anyone tell me how long it takes for changes to your site to be there through the search engines?

Hi Karen.  That really depends.  Google (and other search engines) determine how often they crawl your site based on how often you add new content.  Google crawls my blogs at least once a day, but my lead page only gets crawled about once a week though it used to be a lot less.  Here is a FAQ page I just found for you that may help.  http://sites.google.com/site/webmasterhelpforum/en/faq--crawling--indexing---ranking
